6The Barrie Examiner Wednesday Ma 12 I976 rTechnology makes hair styling challenge says notd stylist By ROSEANNE McCABE The hair styling industry is booming one and stylists have human vanity to thank for it In past years the hair salon has changed from the quaint little corner shop with three hair dryers and basket of curlers Today it has become ultramodern place where hairdryers are only one part of technology which keeps the business humming And hair stylists are the technologists Today there is no way hairstylist can keep up with the business unless he or she gets into the technology of hair care according to Doris Paul world su reme champion of 1974 an well known platform artist That was her reason for coming to Barrie recently for three day workshop at the Holday Inn with 20 local hairstylists With the rapid pace of change in fashion hair styling requires con tinual upgrading The workshop was spon sored by Northern Beauty Supplies owned and operated by two local hair stylists Nick Juffermanus and George Newkirk For the first day Miss Paul demonstrated new cuts and new technique During the next two days stylists ap plied what they learned with the expert on hand to judge remember when did my first cut 26 years ago said the Miss Paul durin an interview It was be straight bob much like toda wedge but not out near as well Now teaching at Van Fikes salon in Toronto she spends much of her time at such workshops all over Canada the United States and in Europe She started her career in Scotland where she worked her way into competi tion The thrill of competiion coupled with her flair as an artist and she was off She in troduced the swing cut into North America in 1964 That was just the beginning The whole bombardment of new ideas started the ball rolling and Miss Paul rolled with it Even though it sounds really sophisticated suc cessful stylist must remember one thing The style means nothing unless it suits the personality You have to know if the customer looks good in mild or exag gerated cut You look at the woman and see the total picutre Hair care is another added concern of the average hair stylist she said With many styles requiring blowdry and curling irons conditioners are musts for keeping the hair healthy Concentrated heat makes the hair brittle she said Advertising often confuses the customer The common term PHbalance is used in many commercials but is rarely understood by the customer The only way to know what shampoo to use or what conditioner is to ask your hair stylist Everyones hair is dif ferent PH balance varies from person to person So the hairdresser must be an information source as well And providing good in formation requires continual upgrading Miss Paul said Hair stylists are attending more and more workshops all over That keeps her busy PEOPLE AND PLACES BARRIE The ladies aux iliary of the Barrie Lions Club met May6atthe home of Lor raine Burbidge 18 Davidson St Annual reports were ap proved by members Winner
