mflvwfi SLa Seconds before Shane Pearsall 18 ran in the Great Sterling Vault Caper Saturday he revelled with the 5000 one dollar bills in BRADFORD The story of Igopogo seaserpent said to inhabit Lake Simcoe is more than legend to Neil Lathangue 52 of Bradford He claims he saw the monster in 1963 Mr Lathangue operator of Lathangue and Skwarchuk Funeral Home recalled his experience in an interview Wednesday On Monday July 22 1963 at 630 pm he was in the pilots seat of his 26foot cabin curiser taking eight other people for ride on Cooks Bay at the southern tip of LakeSimcoe The others were Mr Iathangues wife Marjorie their two children Presbyterian minister Leslie Williams his wife Joan and the three Williams children The lake was just like mirror and could see this thing coming for about three minutes he remembers was so astonished couldnt say anything Then all at once the minister the Rev Williams said Great Scott Its sea monster Ill never forget those words It was moving toward us for long distance passed us went couple of hundred feet beyond us then submerged and disappeared It came up on the other side and then went back into the lake FOUR MINUTES He said the group had wat ched something of char coal scaly color about 75 feet from the boat for about four minutes There was no sense of fear he said But after we realized what it was we realized it could demolish or upset the boat didnt see its head which was about water level It was like blunt instrument being puched through the water Mr Lathangue said the serpent was between 30 and 70 feet long About 10 feet from the head there were three or four sets of dorsal fins stick ing out of the water about 10 inches he said About seven or eight feet behind them there was another set three or four fins At the tip of the tail it left wake So it wasnt something we were dreaming about Mr Lathangue said he in tended to warn other boaters about what he saw and he drove his boat toward land PRETTY WATER r0015 7261059 NG PSYCHED FOR THE CAPER the vault He helped his grandmother Mrs Annet ta Palmer 71 retired nurse from Barrie win some of the money in Sterl As we got closer we decided it would be better not to say anything because they other people would think something was wrong with lEVY Somehow however the story got out and Rev Williams was interviewed on Toronto radio station about what happened He lives in Winnipeg now according to Mr Lathangue BY TRAPPER Canadian newspapers car ried stories about the alleged sighting noting Igopogo was first reported 11 years ago by an Indian trapper and has since been described as dogfaced animal with neck the size of stove pipe The incident is also recorded in the 1974 book In Search of Lake Monsters written by Peter Costello Costello says During the 19th century there were per sistent reports of sea serpent in Lake Simcoe in Ontario as well as earlier In dian legends of monster In 1952 the report of an Indian trapper gave some credence ing Trusts promotion to in crease deposits in saving and chequing accounts ExaminerPhoto That thing in the lake more than legend to Neil to these stories Mr Lathangue said there have been several explana tions of what he and his group saw from school of sturgeon to miniature sub marine But know what Saw he said Whether we are right in our thinking we have no proof It had to be something similar to what we are thinking of People scoff at the idea of sea monsters believe they are there Mr Lathangue said he is also interested in the theories about Unidentified Flying Ob jects UFOs and he recently joined the Floridabased New Atlantean Research Society That group says there is connection between UFOs sea monsters the Bermuda Triangle where ships have disappeared and Yeti large apelike creatures UFOs sound little far fetched but still believe in the existence of them Mr Lathangue said havent seen UFO but other people have And have seen sea monster DUCKWORTH GROVE PLAZA BARRIE Your First Stop in Decorating Broad00m necessarily detached single family home in your future says Jack Byers president of the Barrie Builders Association He says the association is working to provide housing the average locallyemployed Barrie resident can afford but he doubts very many detached homes wil fit into that category Barrie residents as whole cant afford detached houses here he says He says the $8000 dif ference between townhouse lot and detached home lot plus few thousand more in construction costs put detached housing out of reach JACK BYERS of the average Barrie wage earner land cost In order to prov1de housmg mainl semidetached homes an townhouses for Barrie residents he says the association plans to pursue Kfnfigggfiges gra t5 to governmentassxsted plans STUCK WITH such as the federal Assisted Home Ownership Program AHOP which offers interestreduction loans sub sidies to qualified buyers and 1N SECOND YEAR OF D0 WNTURN The building business in Barrie is in the second ear of gownturn says Barrie Building Association presi ent Jack yers And increased fuel costs raising the gas bill for com muters appear partly to blame Were going into the second year of pretty slow business he says He says inflation and other factors make it hard to assign full blame for the downturn to fuel rices but he noted that Torontonians who buy in Barrie an commute to work have in the past provided major stimulus to the industry Its getting too ex nsive to commute he says Mr Byers says he ad not statistics on the downturn but miles that two years ago houses sold as fast as they were Now anybody whos doing any building at all has inven tory he says we Warmer sun Tuesday The weather should be lit tle better Tuesday as the sun breaks through the overcast Low overnight should be near freezing with AHOP Two weeks ago deleaga tion from the association went before councils city development committee to discuss the local housing situation and Mr Byers says he was pleased with the com mittees response to the groups presentation on AHOP The association would like the city to ask the federal government to raise the AHOP home pricelimit for Barrie to $43000 from its cur rent level of $39000 and to apply for grants which would enable it to waive at least rt of lot levies and reduce ligme prices by $1000 or more RESTRICTIVE The $39000 maximum Mr Byers says restricts par tici ating builders to town ouse evelopments and few semidetached homes on an in fill basis At $43000 more semis and possibly even few detached homes could be built under the program he said Mr Byers says city council seems to be doing all it can at esent to improve the local ousing situation with residential districts Five and Six about ready to go The two districts north of Highway 400 contain total of 780 acres still to be developed and in the neighborhood of 4500 units are to be built on that land But Mr Byers says it is too late to bring down prices driven up by several years delay in approving the district plans THE BUYER PAYS Lowering the price is very difficult after theyve held up development for so long he says When development gets held up land gets expen sive Land in Barrie has in fact gotten so expensive he says that his own firm Limar Holdings has built in Painswick Angus Coll ingwood and even Scar borough but not in Barrie Basically Im project FREE Mower Attachment valued up to isnt 30 units wont even start it And in Barrie he says the cost of enough land for 30 unit project is more than hes prepared to shell out Mr Byers says he hopes to see construction underway on developments in district Five and Six by winter and once that happens he anticipates very strong land supply If this had all gone through three years ago we wouldnt have the problem we have now of high land cost he says However he praises the basic concept of district plan ning as way to provide the hig er density dvelopments he considers necessary without provoking resident protests Under district planning townhouses and semis are zoned into an area before there are any neighbors to protest Otherwise he says the detachedhome residents always raise trouble about proposed higher densities They dont have to worry about where theyre going to live he says but their pro tests may shut out those who do need homes TIME TO CLEAN UP FOR SPRING THE Carpet Doctor PROFESSIONAL CARPET
