awn MIDHURST UNITED CHURCH Few inexperienced workers hired for logging positions VANCOUVER CPI Vic Mauro is manager of Van couver logging employment office Once the title for man in his line of work was mancatcherUone who used to snag logging crews off skid road with bottle of whisky and fistful of ferry tickets 30 years ago Now not only the title but the conditions have changed The demand is for highly skilled people and rarely are inexperienced workers hired even to fill the lowerrated logging categories But the occasional oddball application comes along among the 6000 job bids Vic processes each year Last year one came from French chief de cuisine in Vientiane Laos who figured MacMillan Bloedel loggers buckers chokerman and rig ging slingers might be hun gering for gourmet cooking in the classical French tradition Vic laughed about the ap plication in an interview in which he talked of the changing scene in the woods and some of the characters he has known Somehow just dont think any of our logging cam ps are ready for Coq au Vin Demi Deuii Clamecy or Bouchee la Reine Marie An toinette said Vic reading over the chefs suggested camp cookhouse fare Ham burgers pork chops turnips and gravy maybebut Beignettes de Crevette Tour Eiffel LET CHEF DOWN Vic 56yearold grand father who joined Macmillan Bloedel 35 years ago cooks himself as hobby He said he let the French chef down gently recognizing that all culinary artists be they specialists in haute cuisine or hotcakeshave razorthin tempers and fragile egos Unfortunately chef that has spent all his life in high class hotels and restaurants usually isnt much use to us in logging camp he said Weve had some excellent OTTAWAATAGLAN CE ByTHE CANADIAN PRESS WEDNESDAY APRIL 28 1976 The antiinflation board an nounced it will review the en vironment and the clientele are totally different Vic has been running the logging employment office in Vancouver since 1966 In just 10 years hes seen con siderable change in hiring practices and in the type of people coming into logging In the past we used to hire for just about every job there is in ioggin operationachokermen chas ers rigging slingers he said Today with the growth of towns and cities in close proximity to our logging divisions and the gradual fading away of the residential camps much of the hiring for these jobs is done locally Of the applications he gets annually less than one in 10 is actually hired and these are almost always people witr specialized training and skills as well as experience in the logging industry WORK FORCE STABLE Most people have the idea that our northern divisions the ones with residential camps and cookhouses are crying for people all the umesbut theyre not said Vic Its the great Canadian dream go into the woods and work for fame and fortune The reality is that we have fairly stable work force in our logging divisions par ticularly in the residential camps This doesnt prevent people from all over the world from bombarding his office with letters and telephone calls asking for job and bunk If somebody really wants to get into logging management one way is to get university degree in forestry or engineering or tradeschool diploma in heavy duty mechanics or some other skill said the logging employment officer Recently had fellow come in here with doctorate in physics He wanted to take the course and go logging even though hed spent years at university getting his doc torate and teaching He kept insisting he wanted to be logger instead of physicist so we finally arranged for him to take course OLDTIMERS RETIRE Even though most of the legendary hellforleather oldtime loggers have retired or left the industry in the last 10 years Mauro still gets his fair share of rugged in dividualists and characters One of Vics favorites is nicknamed the Duke from one of the Vancouver Island residential camps whose claim to fame is that hes the fastest dishwasher in the world also maybe the wealthiest The Duke comes in to see me every year when theres closure or when hes on holi days He dresses like bank president vision of sar torial elegance right out of Esquire magazine The Duke knows every stock on the market and what its going to do Hes always got market tip for me and he seems to be doing remarkably well him self Vic once hired genuine English lord and sent him off to Kelsey Bay to set Chokers We didnt know he was lord He was just young kid and he happened to walk in when we needed someone at Kelsey Bay In fact we didnt find out about the title until long after hed gone back to Btitain The summer after His Lordship worked up at Kelsey got snowed under with job applications from Britain couldnt figure out why Finally one of these English kids showed up in the office one day and asked what had got him interested in logging He told me hed read in England bunch of really rosy magazine articles writ ten on the logging life and all Its wonders that had been written by this lord WDCX SUNDAY
