got there that spring had been slightly delayed The trees werent as developed as here in Simcoe there were still patches Of snow and the woods were amost void of tird song In the Open parts of the lake the ice was in the recess of breaking up muld see about six pairs of Bufflehead the males in their mntrasting glossy black and white plumage the females in more dull attire Though these are the breeding flumages of these birds they are referred to as winter plumage Unlike most birds which if they have Elicimage change at all ome dull in the fail ducks become dull in the summer the most convenient time for them to moult In the winter they gain their Breeding Plumage once again Also at the lake were few gulls and pair of ScaLlps As mentioned the woods were quiet few Winter Wrens were singing and that bird which symbolizes all birdwatchers the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker was also resent in small numbers On one occasion Brown Creeper was heard singing which doesnt seem to be very common phenomenon Along the lakeshore an oc casional Phoebe Kingfisher or roup of Tree Swallows wo doccasionally be seen Seeing that my ist was still rather on the short size that night set my alarm
