l2The Barrie Examiner Saturda Ma I976 ammonia Orillia juniors could surprise By BILL CURRAN While they havent been receiving as much early atten tion as the defending champion Majors Orillias Junior Pontiacs will be battling club which should make things niggeresting for all opposition in the Simcoe County baseball gue If enthusiasm could do it we would win the title said Grant Gander Ross veteran pilot noting his team has plenty of fighting spirit which he hopes will make up for some lack of experience We have young team with some graduates from midget ranks but they areanxious to make good and thats half the battle he observed In Peter Koehli the Pontiacs have one of the better pit chers in the league according to the Orillia coach who was home run king of the circuit himself during the 505 and ear ly 608 before Nick Owen took over the slugging honors Koehli has been attending McMasters University at Hamilton but comes home on weekends for practice and in tends to spend the summer here The fastballing right hander has hurled for the Majors on occasion but the juniors have prior claim to his services Jerry Wingrove who also plays first is lefthander who turned in some sparkling mound efforts last year and is out with the team again Another pitching prospect who has shown early promise is young Paul Connor 17 just up from midget Paul Jones and Steve Watters have been taking turns behind the bat in practices Gerry Ramsay has been im pressive at third and Dave Russell is likely to play second We are not sure of our shortstop yet said Gander referring to several youngsters he has been trying out Steven McEwan who was top hitter with the Pontiacs during the past two years has another season in junior baseball Jerry Cunningham is another outfielder who is better than average batsman Dave Moore also has im pressed with his enthusiasm and flychasing ability in prac tice sessions We are still looking for talent for our OBA team said Gander stating he would be glad to hear from any players in the area who would like to tryout with the Pontiacs Last year the Orillia youngsters put up sterling battle but lost out to Hamilton Mountaineers in junior OBA playoffs We did win one game to and the other games were close recalled Ross mentioning the fine pitching of Koehli in particular Well be entering the DEA again and hope to make good try for the championship TWIN UPSETS FOR COUNTY TITLES In some 15 years or so as baseball coach Ross has piloted both the Orillia Juniors and the senior Majors Asked his eatest satisfaction he romptly replied We have had of fun out of baseball th as player and coach But we guess our most satisfying year was back in 1969 when our Juniors beat out Orillia Majors in an upset for the county ti Records show that was an upset indeed for the Majors had ust captured the senior OBA championship beating Lon on Astros in the finals and Belleville in the semifinals But an overconfident senior club hadnt fi red on the brilliance of young pitcher named Jerry Ude who hurled three wins including to decisibn in the deciding game of the best out of seven series over Mike Buist To show the victory over the Majors was no fluke the Junior Pontiacs went on to win the junior OBA cham pionshi the following year defeating Thorold Rangers in the fina Then Jerry Udell with some mound help from Doug Roe again setback the Orillia Majors in the county finals to take the championship again That was ustling junior club with real talent and determination said Gander with smile of enthusiasm as he gave credit to Dean Heliotis for his coaching assistance It is hardly likely that we will have as good club this but you just never can tell he mused Thats what is fascinating about baseball PRO HOCKEYISTS GOLF
