an allday seminar at Georgian College to learn about Cana dian family life in perspec tive efieaks with Myfia ompson Eastview home economics teacher Mike The seminar based on course taught at each of the schools represented was jointly organized by home economics teachers Myrna Thompson Hazel Martin Lois Whetham and Jean Noy of Eastview Central and North Collegiates The objective of the seminar complemented the course outlines to make the student aware of the function of the family in society and to help him function better within his own family ac cording to Mrs Thompson Guests akersinclude Com munity and Social Services Bruce Owen Barrie lawyer and Rev Sobert Campbell from Midland Mr Wilson opened the ses sion with general lecture of Marriage Playground or Battleground He stressed the fact that when people marry they take family characteristics with him or her Therefore people should be aware of family background and habits to understand their mate In his individual discussion group Mr Wilson talked about dating and mate selec tion He said he didnt agree with sexual involvement before marriage because lit tle time is therefore spent on developing true close rela tionship which is essential to keepa marriage together Mr Gennings spoke on family stress and counsel ing He said as individuals we encounter crises separate ly Coping mechanisms can help each member deal with their own roblem and to functionwit in theunit Mr Owen spoke on legal aspects of marriage and family life problems He said child abuse and divorce were difficult cases and that because of the differing nature of each case court system should change Mr Campbell talked about the changing family and the role communication plays in keeping the family together Mrs Thompson is op timistic about the validity of family course taught in schools The present pro gram which was initiated in 1968 is geared toward Grade 13 home economic students But because the course has reaped favorable results in
