Manpower Centre for Students says job op portunities actually look bit righter this year but any student who wants job will have to work at getting one Mrs Jeffery has been busy for the past weeks visiting employers and writing letters promoting the idea of hiring students Job vacancies are starting to come in now and by the end of April she expects to have surpassed last years total of 124 for the same period But the vacancies do not start adding up until May Mrs Jeffery is also visiting the high schools in this area resenting the role of the student centre and advising students on how to look for work Student manpower no longer registers students at the high schools In the past before student manpower centres became more sophisitcated some centres would go out and register as many students as they could and many of the students who signed up werent really looking for work Mrs Jeffery said she is placing her major emphasis on lining up jobs visiting prospective employers and promoting the student cause There will always be enough students to fill the positions she said Now the onus is on the student If student wants work he or she must take the initiative to go to the centre and register GreySimcoe cadets inspected Thursday The No2919 Grey and Sim coe Foesters Army Cadet Corps will be holding its third annual inspection at pm Thursday at the Barrie Ar mory The in supportive role locating employers ad vising and referring students and doing everything possible to encourage people to hire students But student should only consider the centre as sup plement to the job search program she said adding that too many people believe all they have to do is register and manpower will find them ajob The grape vine starts here she said but the students are the ones who have to get thejobs Mrs Jeffery suggested all students who want summer job should start looking now They should register with the centre ask friends and relatives if they know of openings and maybe write letters She also warned that students applying for jobs should ensure their ap plications are filled out neatly and properly and that they wear suitable clothing when applying in person stu ent applying for job in restaurant should not arrive for an interview in dir ty old jeans with their hair hanging in their face she said Overall the job situation is little better than in the past Mrs Jeffery said While restraint is making the gover nment job situation little grim the private sector ap pers to be picking up she said Jobs in the service in dustries remain fairly con stant she added Mrs Jeffery noted that statistics prove one out of every five employer visits results in an opening and she be provided by the Pipes and Drums of the Ontario Provin cial Police Friends relatives and the public are invited to attend the inspection The most proficient cadet in orienteering whill be presented with the Com pany Mess trophy after prac tical orienteering tests are held in May should begin to see the effects of her visits in May After the centre has its full com lement of workers at the end this month Mrs Jef fery intends to continue with regular employer visits Right now the centre is only open Mondays and Fridays at at Dunlop St as there is only the one person on staff June 21 to 25 will be hirea student week in this area Other promotions will include banner across
