i2The Barrie Examiner Saturday April 24 1976 Creemore coach is optimistic Coach of the Creemore Braves of the Simcoe Count baseball league Carl Gowan has high hopes that 1976 wi be Creemores year to get enough breaks to take the county championship We came close the last three years but didnt quite nuke itwe deserve some breaks replied the Creemore pilot when asked what he thought about Creemores chances in the coming cam ign After moments further reflection cautiously add the comment Of course it is too early yet to tell but if we get all of last years players ask we should have chance We expect to have most of Creemore finished on top loop last year with 19 wins eight losses and tie Then Braves went on to win four and lose three in the gayoffs Ultimately they were eliminated by Barrie Red in the semifinals after keenly waged series three games to two Mel Kennedy outiasted Terry Gowan in the deciding gme which Barrie won to but Creemore supporters stily pointed out that Creemore sluggers Randy Mac Mullan and Paul Walker were missing from their lineup in the south section of the coun MacMullan is now working in bank at Hamilton and lives during the week at Burlington But coach Gowan pointed out MacMullen goes home Creemore on weekends and he is counting on him playing for the Braves again One of the teams standout players MacMullan rates among the leagues top pitchers and Sluggers He performs in the infield and the outfield as well Creemore has been noted for its versatile performers Terry Gowan 22 and his brother Rick 19 are moundsmen of ability who also play in other positions Both are good hit ters as well When not pitching Terry usually covers third base in the Creemore infield while Rick frequently catches or plays at second Another top slugger Paul Walker catches and plays the outfield as does Barru Corby and RickMcArthur Wayne Fraser has moved to Collingwood and may not be available to the Creemore club But we are hoping hell change his mind once the season gets started stated the Creemore coach veteran of the sport who played some 20 years before becoming coach Carl Gowan and his brothers Bill and Norm were wellknown ball players in county leagues for years They were versatile performers too with Bill pit ching and catching and Carl laying in the infield and out field as well as behind the ate Norm whose death last November was deeply mourned in sports circles usually played shortstop HOPE TO BREAK MAJ ORS MONOPOLY Like other teams in the circuit the Braves will be endeavoring to stop the Orillia Majors in an effort to break up their monopoly on county baseball titles Records show Doug Howards team has won the county circuit honors eight times during the past 12 ears as well as the senior OBA championships in 1964 an 1969 Barrie coach Nick Owen was one of Orillias leading Sluggers in the 1969 win as well as later before joining the Red Sox The home run hitter is expected to concentrate on playing for the Red Sox this coming season rather than coaching and he should be of material help to Barries cause The Red Sox last year battled their way into the county finals before losing to the Majors four games to one The highlight of the series from Barrie viewpoint was sterl ing pitching duel in which Mike Gryba shaded Jerry Udell for to win for Nick Owens team Udell came back with fivehitter to gain to victory for Orillia in the closing game of the series former Barrie player Wally McMillan singled Murray St Onge home with the winning run to mark the close of an exciting season Udell also blanked Barrie to with onehitter in another brilliant mound chore But this is another year and things could be different remarked Coach Cowan of Creemore when the 1975 records were reviewed The Braves reached the finals in 1974 and 1973 losing to the Ma ors both times Ivy Leafs ca ture the county league honors in 1972 and Alliston Canuc were 1968 winners Orillia junior Pontiacs beat out the Majors for the county honors in 1969 and 1970 upsets due largely to superb pitching of Udell The latter who turned 26 in March is expected to be on the mound for the Majors again The Majors trimmed Ivy Leafs three straight in their semifinal last year after downing Collingwood Cavemen the same way in the first round playoffs The outlook for the 1976 season should be pretty well known after tomorrows league meeting at Ivy ALEXANDER SHINES WITH LEA FS Area followers of NHL hockey playoffs noted with degree of satisfaction the good showing made by defence stalwart Claire Alexander for Toronto Leafs against Philadelphia Flyers in the actionpacked series The brilliance of the harddriving former Orillia Terrier helped the Leafs make much better showing than an ticipated although rash of penalties from rough tactics also hampered the rampaging Philadelphia team Anyway friends of Alexander were pleased to see him picked as one of the Leafs stars of the series He was par ticularly outstanding for his defensive play in the to Leaf victory at Toronto last Saturday night The native of Collingwood moved up to pro ranks after playing leading part in helping Orillia Terriers capture the Allan Cup in 1973 Claire
