li wahy litThe Barrie Examiner Wednesday April 14 I976 SPORTS CORNER And now the Barrie Flyers are faced with the mammoth task of beating the Thunder Bay Twins where it countson Twins home ice if they hope to extend their hockey season The sixth game of the Ontario Hockey Association Senior League final moves into Thunder Bay this evening Flyers have the task of blemishing the nearly spotless record at home of the defending Allan Cup champions Flyers will be taking with them bit of advice from playing coach Darryl Sly Hes not about to flatter anyone into believing the Flyers have found the key to the Twins weaknesses following Barries triumphant 32 win Monday To win Flyers will have to come up with their best game of the series if not the entire season What Sly would like the Flyers to remember is that hockey is game played on sheet of ice and thats where the final issue will be settled Twins have acknowledged that little extra incentive provided by solid fan backing Hockey has become game not only dependent upon butone which thrives on fan support Spectators can be classified as those who attend the game to watch If they cheer then we call them fans Barrie fans would have had lot to cheer about Monday if they had of been there mere 1000 land that an optimistic count watched Flyers in their finest game of the series at the Barrie Arena Monday The win prevented an embarrassing elimination by the Twins Twins brought along their own private cheering gallery Perhaps 50 at the most Small as it was it kept up continuous chant which irritated the usually sedate Barrie rooters One Barrie fan could do little else but hang his head when he was asked by Twins supporter just what kind of town is this He was questioning what he considered an apathetic ap proach to senior hockey by Barrie Flyers recently returned from Thunder Bay where at one game there were over 5000 spectators The opening game of the series brought out crowd of 1800 to the Barrie Arena There were less than 1500 on hand for the second game and meagre handful to support the Flyers in their doordie struggle Monday The crowds were better than the Flyers got throughout the regular campaign but far below the level of support expected Without taking away from the hardcore Flyers fans Barrie had to it alone Monday The club outhustled and outclassed the Twins on the ice Now the feat must be duplicated tonight if Flyers want to prevent the sound of champagne corks poppin in the Twins dressing room win tonight brings the series back home Thursday It makes difference having 5000 people cheering not so much for you but against the other team Twins coach Peter DePiero said after Mondays loss to Barrie that the thought of returning to the Hockeyhungry Thunder Bay fans was lurking in the back of the Twins mind Instead of giving 100 per cent you get 120 to 130 per cent from each guy said the Twins playing coach That may ex plain the Twins envious winrecord at home As it stands now Flyers have 2l record at home Twins sat back on their heels then rocked Flyers with successive shutouts Saturday and Sunday in Thunder Bay to force the mustwin situation upon Barrie think its pyschological thing we both have coming into each others rink said DePiero We were lucky enough to win in Barrie DePiero said its fought to beat the Flyers in Barrie They play the smaller rink well think the larger surface at home helps us little It gives us more room to move and tires them out little DePiero is not expecting repeat of the weekend whitewashing He expects tougher game and Sly expects the Flyers to be tougher It now is just matter of hours before the season either ends for Barrie or they turn it around in the direction of home iLTllRllI school captured the championship of
