DISTRICT NE WS 2The Barrie Examiner Monday April 12 1976 Essa recreation subject of brief BAXTER Recreation groups seeking grants in Essa township will have to wait while longer Councillor Anthony Mancini says he is preparing brief on recreation to be presented to Olympics at Beeton this month BEETON Plans for Junior Olympics floor hockey tour naments at Tecumseth Beeton Central School to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday April 27 and 28 were announced by Ted Monkman convener There will be six schools par ticipating with pupils from grades four to six The junior girls tournament will be held on Tuesday and junior boys on Wednesday The Royal Bank of Canada through the Olympic commit tee is making crests cer tificates and ribbons available for participants the ribbons go ing to the winners The tournaments will be opened by special guests on both days along with the rais ing of the Olympic flag and repeating the Olympic oath Each school will represent recognized country in the sport of hockey council before township recreation committee is set up Council has given first reading to bylaw setting up the committee but it will have to be revised Coun Mancini said The aim is to retain the identity of existing recreation boards and then have board to coordinate them with people on it representing cross section of the municipality hesaid The discussion came up after Dyan Bougie asked for $100 to help pay for equipment in the Angus minor softball house league and Jim Koster asked for $600 for new fencing and bleachers in Utopia park Mr Koster said the Utopia Athletic Association will pro vide free labor for the project Mrs Bougie said the Angus league will have seven teams this year and it has been sug gested the league become af filiated with Angus Communi ty Services Inc which runs activities at Angus schools Utopias league has five teams with players coming from such places as Barrie Ivy and Angus Mr Koster said Reeve Eugene Smith said the various recreation and com munity groups need to get together What we do for one we must be prepared to do for all or well get into hot water he said Smith outlines policy to restrain By SMITH MPP Simcoe East The federal provincial energy ministers conference has left some profound ques tions for which answers are re quired to safeguard over spriralling of energy costs in this province think it is important to tell you about Ontarios position in this matter It has been widely reported that the federal government will propose that the wellhead ice of fuel oil should be raised $2 barrel from the present price of $8 in order to reflect current world prices The question Ontario wants answered is what has the world price got to do with the price Canadians have to pay for their own fuel supplies It seems reasonable to us to have Cana dian oil and gas prices reflect the actual costs of production ENSURE ENERGY The federal government refutes this stating revenues must be secured so that further explorations can be made to en sure an energy future for Canada This is all well and good but the increases in oil over the past three years do not support this answer The price has increased from $285 barrel to the present $8 During this time royality taxation war was being bought between Ottawa and the two producing provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan hence most of the revenues from the increases went to them These price increases have had horrendous repercussions upon Canadian manufacturers and consumers Right now manufacturers are finding it increasingly more dif ficult to compete with their best trading partner the The current United States An Amish farmer in Lan caster Pa stands on his plow as his team of mules wellhead price for American crude is $766 per barrel $234 less then the proposed increase PRICE DIFFERENCE In its attempts to control the sources of inflationary pressure the US government is making price difference between new and old oil supplies My colleague energy minister Dennis Timbrell has also considered this to be one strategy to restrain the high cost of heating oil and gasoline For the past several weeks he has sought support from other provinces and public support within Ontario to fight what he terms the federal governments zombie march toward rais ing Canadian oil prices to world levels Bringing this closer to home person heating with oil and driving 10000 miles per year will pay another $90 year on top of last years increase of $125 If on the other hand you use natural gas and drive 10000 miles annually your increase will be around $85 $65 more than experienced in the 1975 in creases The effects of this increase over the long run are quite devastating and is not in the spirit of Ottawas antiinflation program WANTS CHARGES LAID OTTAWA CP Erik Niel sen PCYukon said in the Commons on Wednesday that there appears to be sufficient evidence to lay charges of ob structing justice against some Yukon employees of the federal health and northern affairs de partment Mr Nielsen asked Justice Minister Ron Basford to have the RCMP investigate the matter but Mr Basford prom ised only to look into the mat ter Row upon row of Easter Photo McCague finds most people don favor early election By GEORGE McCAGUE MPP DufferinSimcoe Do you think six months is sufficient to determine whether the present minority govern ment at Queens Park is doing or not doing its job Do you believe that an election right now is necessary Would it resolve any of the challenges and problems facing all citizens of Ontario How did we get ourselves into this mess These and many other questions were posed after the two Opposition parties in troduced motions of non confidence in your minority government Probably these questions were asked more often here at Queens Park than by the voters out in the ridings From talking with many con stituents in our riding get the impression that many people do not regard an election at this time as absolutely essential FAULTY TIMING What they have told me is We voted only last September 18 The result was minority government Here it is six mon ths later and you want us to trek to the polls already The timing is faulty Instead of thinking about an election get on with the job of managing the store That is the generally held position of the voters Not everybody talked with agreed Naturally that is not what everybody said Nor would ex pect such an unanimous opinion few people thought an election now would clear the air and whoever was elected could get on with the job of governing But there is no guarantee that an election would result in majority government For the present am con vinced that the minority gover nment is working well The Op position parties until the present motions of non confidence were introduced had agreed Not only that but both leaders have stated publicly that they are com mitted to ensuring that it works well Why the sudden change of FARMER HEADS FOR HOME trudges back to the barn after day of plowing Warm spring days have brought the farmers and their traditional mind For the Liberals the an swer remains shrouded in mystery CALCULATEI RISK Apparently the new Liberal leader believed that he would take calculated risk in proposing subamendment to the main motion of non coinfidence offered by the New Democrats In so doing the risk backfired because the NDP said that it could support the Liberals generally worded sub amendment All along the Liberals never really believed that the NDP would support their motion causing the gover nment to fall Later the Liberals were back peddling furiously grasping for means to extricate them selves from the mess without losing face That process is still proceeding because alllLiberal MPPs have gone back to their ridings as public opinion pollsters ascertaining whether an election is necessary at this time You may have gained the im pression that as government member oppose the traditional right of the Official Opposition Leader to present nonsconfidence motion No at all COULD FORCE ISSUE What does concern me is that the voting public would have been denied to see what are the specifics of our present restraint program as presented in the proposed April 6th budget If the Opposition par ties are opposed to our specific ways of fighting inflation then they can combine to force an election Then the people would have greater information on which to render vote in mid May on our efforts to beat back inflation That is the minimum un dertaking which the Opp position parties could offer the voter the opportunity to see specific financial proposals and what priorities your present government has for the coming fiscal year In that way the Liberals and New Democrats would demonstrate little more faith in the voting public of this Province equipment back into the fields AP Photo By their present course of ac tion both parties show highly irresponsible expensive and unjustified approach to the run ning of public affairs in this province Otherwise see no need for consuming time and precious energy on costly election when that same time and energy can be used in working together to put our house into economically good shape for better and stable future More highway overpasses 10er and coumv STEAK nous Under New Management MOONSTONE Highway 93 messing linking Craighurst and Hillsda merits second priority for an overpass in Medonte townshi when Highway 400 is widen to four lanes says Dalton Jermey charman of Medonte planning board The former warden who headed the county council in 1964 agreed the Mount St Louis ski area intersection should have first priority for Cloverleaf Plans made for service road in this area were fully justified he said The much discussed County Road 19 crossing of Highway 400 linking Eady to Moonstone did not have as the others But they might build lyover road for safety he remarked Highwa 12 from Orillia con nects wit Highway 400 near Coldwater with traffic lights at the intersection This helps to make turns safe during busy weekends The popular Medonte Bona ire golf course can be seen from this intersection MORE TRAFFIC They will probably need Cloverleaf there too in the future said Mr Jermey in reference to the County Road 19 crossing But the other two crossings carry more traffic right now Discussing map plans for new connecting link road from 19 to County Road 30 at Orr lake Mr Jermey said he felt this was logical Four miles of travel could be reduced to about mile and half he stated This would shorten the driv ing distance from Moonstone to ElmvaIe and Wasaga Beach area and encourage more traf fic to use this route he sug gested Widening of 400 to four lanes through Medonte has been discussed for several years and considerable preliminary work has been done Surveys have been done including service road at Mount St Louis turn Representatives of the ministry of transportation and communications have con sulted Medonte council and township officials about plans at various times and maps have been shown at different meetings Because of the restraint program it is not known when construction will start TOO DICTA TORIAL Rynard opposes Rynard member of Parliament for Simcoe Nnorh days he will vote against federal Bill C83 the peace and security legislation because it contains strict gun controls The gun control would only control the people who wont be out of control Dr Rynard said It wont control the aiminal He said frightening aspect of the War Measures Act allows the government to enter private homes without warrant and seize all weapons The government is getting too dictatorial he said This is not much different than in Russia He said that with legislation such as the seat belt law in On tario and the gun controls pro posed federally people are los ing their freedom In voting against gun control Dr Rynard said he will have to vote against other sections of the federal bill which he favors Its an omnibus bill with all these things mixed together purposely he said Thats the art of politics It should be Turning to county affairs Mr Jermey commended the county council in holding down its overall levy below last year which he agreed was an achievement which was an ex ample to others in this infla tionary period It is too bad the school board didnt follow the example he commented stating ratepayers deserved better break He termed one salary figure as ab solutely ridiculous member of the Barrie suburban roads commission Mr Jermey said the revenue was set on the percentage of mill based on assessment We have to stay within these guidelines he said former member of Medonte council for some 20 years Mr Jermey said his major concern was for the ratepayers who had to pay the costs in his taxes The plight of the ratepayers would receive prime attention right now he said as reference was made to soaring taxes and inflation in todays economic trends Site of somewhere in the county is not expected to be made for some time yet After applications are con sidered tour of prospective site areas by representatives of the sponsoring Ontario Plowmens Association and Simcoe County committee is considered likely We should have some suitable sites in our area remarked Allan Glassford deputy reeve of Tecumseth township Reeve Medonte township said he had no doubt there were places in Medonte where the match could be held It is early yet he said pointing out the match is still five years off law made mandatory that proposed new laws such as this should be
