WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH He works through all faiths to fulfil Christs prayer God is working through wide variety of denominations to fulfil Christs prayer that all may be one in Him Rev Everitt Ashton of Central United Church told Lenten service there Thursday He said churchgoers are usually wellinformed about their own denominations missionary efforts in the com munity over overseas but often overlook the efforts of other denominations Sometimes we forget that other communions other Christians are about the Fathers work too he said He told of how an ecumenical temple he visited on recent trip to the Canary Islands is carrying on missionary work Workers from the church reach out to such varied groups as children sailors hippies with the message of Christ he said Some of the young hippies he said have had their lives changed by this message and are themselves currently training for the ministry The tem le at which he read the Gospel to morning ser vice puts heavy emphasis on Christian reunion and leaders there describe the temple as the echo of the prayer of the Lord that all be one The building is filled with symbolism he said Pipes REV EVERITT ASHTON resembling those of broken organ represent the discor dance of divided church the building is shaped like ship symbol of the church and the altar is rock to remind wor shipers that the rock was Chirst In such place he said the mission of the church is caught and is shared and the temple serves as reminder that God is still saying something to people changing their lives and leading them through faith to lives of service and Christian witness Mr Ashton was the fifth of six preachers at the weekly Thursday services at Central United Rev Donald Jay pastor of the church will preach next week at 1230pm Rev Ray in the making ARTHUR STOREY Grace United Church Rinzema has described revolution in the following way First there is fixed direction of thought with many taboos Then there is weight put on the taboos Slowly rigid thinking weakens to mere con formity The majority by con sent largely without thinking follows the old way of thinking but not rigidly Then comes time when all the taboos are gone and contrary ideas are allowed some merit They become at first respectable and then possible alternatives Some revisions take place of the old thinking by the majority Finally and rapidly as acceptance of alternative ideas becomes more popular there comes rapid swing away from the old way The whole of society is keyed up No rigidity is allowed and new ideas begin to take over Violence if any comes in this last stage when confidence in the value and possibility of change has been gained By looking at our socrety today believe we are entering the early stages of new revolution One that will catch many of our leaders and even ourselves by surprise because it represents on the surface return to oldfashioned values and resources It seems there is revolution on against the new ideas of the early 19705 It seems the individualistic situational and materialistic system of values of our time is beginning to crumble before the pressure for deeper more trustworthy values In the midst of all our sexual freedom with all its good and evil in the midst of our great drive toward progress development and growth for their own sake in the midst of the great focus on the in dividual as the most important part of creation my rreeoom my personal success and status my personal happiness over all else including marriage family community when all these trends have been pandered to and nurtured by an acceptance of manipulation of people and truth for cynical and material reasons by mass mediathere comes reac tion not reaction as reac tionary but as revolutionary and it looks back and inward to spiritual values too hastily thrown away in the past It is no longer taboo to have personal religion that shows and to practise that faith Per sons are more free to bring strong personal principles to their job their recreation and their public life To have per sonal morality of your own choosing is becoming ac ceptable Traditional religious and moral values have been rediscovered as having merit of their own On every point business community and politics there is questioning of the drive to bigness excess and newness There is new ap preciation of economy the preservation of human values and the conservation of disap pearing resources structures and traditions More and more people are refusing to be manipulated and directed toward the materialistic life of the almighty dollar con sumerism and status symbols simply because they are told they ought Private profit and growth or development are no longer accepted as justification for everything What does this mean It means many of our most out spoken and supposedly with it executives and leaders are already out of date Their following is already diminishing Their future will be increasingly filled with frustration and confusion Parents are concerned about the content of their childrens education about the basics and the morality taught and protrayed by teachers There is new trend toward personal and religious values that takes the form of concern for per sonal honesty faith and worth Churches are experiencing growth from people who are really searching for deeper values and those churches are ready to respond as never before on that level Everyone in general is more alert to FAITH MISSIONARY CHURCH 229 Crawford St Barrie 945 am Sunday School for the whole family 11am Morning Worship pm Evening Service Wednesday 800 pm gids of growth and progress are cracking as the lure of statistics and the magic of newness and planned ob solescence fade Preservation and conservation are words replacing development and redevelopment new day seems to be coming that may just be more human and humane because people are beginning revolution toward ideeper spiritual and moral values for their own lives As confidence in change grows this revolution will accelerate For many of us its only through this revolution that all the freedom of the modem day will really pay off We thought God was dead or gone on vacation we
