Pierre Eliott Trudeau puppets arent selling so well these days but most of RoseMarie Rintouls puppet characters are being bought like hotcakes Twelve years ago Mrs Rin toul started making puppets for her two young sons Today she sells her wares in stores across Canada of the Trudeau puppets she said they sold well when Trudeaumania was at its height In the beginning Mrs Rin toul was making puppets for her own family and friends Then her husband Jim at publicschool principal asked her to make puppets to illustrate storybook characters as teaching aids The puppets came to the at tention of Thomas Nelson and Sons and the Toronto book pub lishers asked her to supply some to illustrate characters in their books At first she was reluctant but she changed her mind when she saw her designs turned into shoddily made imports that only lasted 20 minutes in the hands of little children SCARED TO DEATH When she took her first order for 6000 puppets lost five pounds and didnt sleep for week she said was scared to death was trained to be teacher not manufacturer Mrs Rintoul said she learned The Barrie Examiner Saturday April 1037619 STROUD Wiley serum in our church with St James and St Pauls the felt and fur pieces for her puppets are cut out by machine and the sewing is contracted out But she does all the art work by hand She wasnt satisfied when she allowed other people to do the faces she said They looked like someone elses puppets not mine She tries to keep the prices of her puppets down in spite of rising costs of raw materials Wholesale prices for felt pup pets stand at $2 and the fur pup pets sell for $250 to $290 In boutiques and other retail out lets prices are often closer to $4 She figures she makes be tween 10000 and 15000 puppets year It takes two or three hours in the afternoon and the same in the evening Of her 200 designs most are fairytale and storybook characters Among her animal puppets the bestsellers are her lion and frog The puppets sell in stores from Prince Edward Island to Vancouver and in many shops throughout the United States They are used for play therapy by some mental health units Children will often reveal whats bothering them through puppet play she said Recen tly she designed special pup pet to help Portuguese children overcome the strangeness of going into hospital Bluefin tuna stocks said to be dwindling CHARLOTIETOWN CP research program conducted by Prince Edward Island oceanographer concludes that bluef in tuna stocks available to Canadian inshore fishermen are diminishing and more regu lations appear inevitable But it holds up hope that some day sports fishermen may be allowed to battle the mighty fish without decreasing their numbers simply by setting them free afterward The PEI Bluefin Tuna Re search Program is co sponsored by Environment Canada and the PEl depart ment of tourism parks and con servation The author of the report Mi chael Butler of Summerside said his conclusions are based on two years of study in all three Maritime provinces Mr Butler said the 1975 phase of the program collected data on tuna catches throughout the Maritimes Regional personnel were trained and stationed at the major bluefin fishing cen tresNorth Lake and the Mal peqtieRustico area in PEI Caraquet in New Brunswick and St Margarets Bay in Nova Scotia Detailed information on 600 giant bluefin was collected and computerized Growth rings from 188 tuna are currently being analysed at the federal fisheries departments biologi cal station at St Andrews NB to estimate ages TRACKING HALTED Only 938 bluefin were caught in 1975 from inshore waters of the Atlantic provinces and Que bec compared with 2058 in 1974 The PEl catch was 329 in 1975 compared with 1048 in 1974 Ultrasonic tracking of tagged tuna had to be dropped in 1975 because of budget reduction We wanted to continue our 1974 experiments and con clusively prove that giant bluefin can be fought to exhaus tion at the end of 130pound line then tagged and released without killing the fish Dr Butler said The consensus of scientific opinion to date is that the bluefin will survive this treatment Thus in the event of further restrictive regulations pre season and postseason catch tag and release period might have merit Other projects carried out in the study included analysis of tuna feeding behavior location of major catch zones and the relationship between fighting time and size Many of the data were in corporated into scientific pa per presented by the Canadian delegation at the 1975 confer ence of the International Com mission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna in Madrid in No vember
