between Guided missiles in cancer fight ST PETERSBURG Fla AP Using the circulatory system as battlefield in the war against cancer scientists say they are developing drug filled capsules to act as micro scopic anticancer guided mis siles As scientists described it to day the capsules would circu late through the body until they detect their preselected can cercell targets Then the cap sules would home in on the target attach to or penetrate the cells and release their warhead of drugs Dr George Poste of the Ros well Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo NY told an American Cancer Society science writers seminar that the principle of using the cap sulescalled lipo somesagainst cells has been demonstrated Using special cells grown in test tubes Roswell Park researchers made liposomes that sought out those cells Poste said This was done by infusing into the liposomes proteins that nor mally seek out the cells to at tackthem Poste said that next month he and colleagues will publish ks showing that by ch nging liposome surface composition capsules can be indhced either to fuse with cell surface or be engulfed in tact by the cell The development of lipo somes for injection into the body that could rccognize can cer cells would thus be major step toward achieving the selective uptake of anticancer drugs by the intended target Ioste said USE SOUND WAVES Liposomes are balls made from fatty substances called phospholipids found in the membranes of animal cells The substance is formed into balls with onionlike layers High frequency sound waves break the big balls into smaller ones that reseal in round Shape Drugs or other substances can be placed between the lay ers as the liposomes are for med he added Poste said liposomes are about one onehundred thousandth of an inch in diame ter smaller than most cells Liposomes injected into ani noncancer mals circulate unchanged in the blood until taken up by body cells Poste said The capsules which have not been tested in humans are inert and dont provoke the bodys defense sys tem against foreign substances headded The advantage of using tar geted liposomes he said is that most of an anticancer drug dose could reach the disease area Drugs taken orally or by in jection spread throughout the body and most never reach the troubled area Powerful anti cancer drugs are toxic and have to be used carefully be cause they harm normal as well as diseased cells Poste said cancer cells also can build up resistance to cer lain drugs and not absorb them Liposomes could spirit the drugs into the cells and release them This method provides us for the first time with way to get large amounts of material into cells that normally wouldnt get in he said Campaign saves oil LONDON British Steel Zor poration is aiming to save million $4 million year by judicious use of wrenches This sum the corporation calculates is the value of oil wasted annually through leaks in illfitting pipes and ac cidental spillages In an effort to plug the 815 IX daily leak of lubricating hy draulic and other oils British Steel has launched save oil save money campaign Already the company says the campaign is saving 9250000 year even though it is not yet fully operational The campaign is spearheaded by team of lubrication engi neers whose aim is threefold stop leaks evaluate seals while eliminating faulty design and improve the pipe fittings being used Although leaks cannot be completely eliminated the engineers will ensure that what oil dtres escape will not be lost the divisions My style of organization is essentially to let
