Man Called Intrepid Intrepid was the code name for the BSC chief William Stephenson and remains the Bermuda cable ad dress of the nowretired spy master who was knighted for his wartime exploits Sir William not related to the author was born at Point Douglas Man near Winnipeg so years ago He was an ace in the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War and made fortune in industry between the wars when he mingled with the great including the future prime minister Winston Chur chill In 1940 when the war reached the stage where Hitler con trolled most of Western Europe and threatened Britains shores Churchill sent Stephen son to New York to form bridge with Franklin Roosevelt president of the thenneutral United States That was the birth of the BSC PLAYED DIRTY TRICKS In the ensuing five years BSC and its thousands of agents and underground workers in oc cupied countries helped change the course of the war with an unprecedented record of assas sination sabotage espionage and what Sir the record in much more detail Stevenson who flew with the Royal Navy met Sir William while on an in telligence mission Sir William in foreword to the book de scribes the author as my friend and former colleague The book focuses sharply on Sir William at times blowing him up larger than life The reader may wonder how one man could maintain the Chur chillRoosevelt liaison and still ply the cloakanddagger trade on three continents At one point the author quotes the late Ian Fleming writer of the James Bond series and then BSC agent British seaman was being investigated for selling convoy
