l2The Barrie Examiner Tuesday March 30 1976 SPORTS CORNER Minor system still blooming By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Philly style whatever style it was their style and thank fully not our style That 12hour return trip from Willow Grove Penn Sunday offered ample opportunity to reflect on three games played by the Barrie Allan Cook Juveniles It was juveniles against juniors but basic lack of upbringing in fundamental hockey gave Barrie heady edge Juveniles won two of possible three games It could have been three correction it should have been three but let down of one period cost Barrie four unanswered goals and the game Teams met and defeated by Barrie include the Philadelphia Junior Flyers and the Wintersports Juniors at Willow Grow In the three games it was evident the junior clubs were hurt by the lack of solid minor hockey background While hockey in the area is not new it still is far from the epidemic propor tions of the Canadian winters The Flyers had 19 states to choose from They were as team official Dave Peters said The cream of the cropthe pick of the 19 states Against the Junior Flyers the Juveniles had little trouble in outskating the Philly club although they needed steady goaltending by Mike Park to keep the score at respectable 63 Hockey is game decided by the club making the least num ber of mistakes By playing sound positional game and honing up of the fundamental rules of passing skating and fitness you cut down on the possibility of mistakes It was not uncommon to see three Flyers converging on Barrie puck carrier An equal number attempting to check one player having forward chased down on breakaway by Barrie defender having Philly dump the puck in Barries end then leave it instead of converging and putting pressure on Barrie early defenceman screening goaltender hesistancy and lack of discipline in removing the puck from their own end and definite lack of finesse in finishing off plays Defenceman Jamie Turner literally outskated Philly for ward who had couple steps on him with nothing but empty ice between him and the Barrie net to knock away golden scoring opportunity Barrie played two bruising games The opener against Philly was mild in comparison to the second game of the series with Wintersports The Junior club took Barries minds off their intended task eventually defeating Barrie 65 The last goal was scored on breakaway with two seconds remaining in the game Coach Ted Moore was to remark yesterday morning how the American teams refused to give up Even when they were down and losing badin then still kept trying Barrie knows While some consolation is taken from the fact the match was not very good game of hockey due to an over abundance of cheap penalties by both teams and break down in officiating it was nonetheless sweet win for Wintersports Both Junior clubs were young in experience The Win tersports club was first year entry with the Junior Flyers just wrapping up their second season of competition in the Mid Atlantic Junior Hockey League All indications coming out of the Philly area point to steady increase in interest in hockey at the minor level Five years ago there were five rinks in the area now there are 23 said Peters He noted that many are open around the clock Hockey at least at the junior level seems to be for those who can afford it Peters said it cost each player on the Flyers $400 season Another team official was to later explain that number of fund raising events were held by the team to help the members raise the money The team itself matched the players fee The cost of ice rental is $70 an hour said former Barrie resident Ross Turnbull who is an arena manager Turnbull is also camp director at the Fred Shero Hockey Camp as well as being vice president and general manager of Valley Forge Sports Garden This big explosion of hockey at the minor level coincides with the dramatic impact of the National Hockey League Flyers Everything is Flyers Theres Flyers bumper stickers licence plates Tshirts hats mugs down to key chain holders The Philly media appears destined to convince the public that the Flyers are the best thing to happen to hockey since Kate Smith took vocal lessons Flyers are probably the single most important boost to the hockey system at least in the Philly area It would be unfair to depart without mentioning number of highlights from the trip Moores guided tours actually misplaced highways offered the chance to view the historic landscape of Valley Forge Philadelphia and other parts still unknowna classic play Steve Bergie setting up Gene Bergie who baseballed it into the Wintersports net It was the second Shorthanded goal in succession by Barrie and did more to deflate the Juniors than the three more tallies which followedThe hospitality of the Wintersports Juniors helped overcome lack of same by the Flyers USW one Win shy of championship United Steel Workers USW minor peewees hold com manding 20
