8The Barrie Examiner Saturday March 27 1976 Spiritual weigh twatchers should watch their diet By REV WUEST Emmanuel Baptist Church Have you noticed how many people are on diets lately Or maybe its just that many more people are keeping to diets and thus being successful in losing weight Someone said many peeple cant count calories and they have the figures to prove it Im sure it was thin per son who made that statement Its surprising to hear per son who has trouble seeing his or her feet when looking straight down announce with no small amount of pride that he is on strict diet Well its not so amazing after all since it indicates the dieter has been successful in losing some weight He has right to be rpoud On the other hand if someone has been on diet for some time and has not lost weight or horrors to even think of it has gained weight nothing can pry the fact of being on diet from them They prefer to suflt fer in silence consoling themselves that someone once remarked somewhere that some people are just born with large bones The underlying truth is ap plicable in any are of life If something has worked for me if Ive found it successful then Im happy and even anxious to tell others about it Maybe thats why so many never boast about the Lord Jesus Christ Youve probably heard someone say Ive tried Christianity but it didnt work Instead of being proud they are just the opposite The apostle Paul said am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth But maybe these non boasters were looking for ins tant success without being willing to follow the directions given in the Bible Theyre just like overweight people who criticize the diet but in reality have never eaten according to it Jesus is my personal Saviour and Lord know that He satisfied my longing heart and fills my hungry soul with goodness Dont think never have any problems either Jesus became man and as the GODMAN took my place and suffered the just punishment of Holy God for all the sins Ive ever committed He rose from the dead by the power of the Spirit of God and is alive today to forgive empower help guide comfort and use me He is all this to me not because Iam worthy of His love help and care but because followed the direc tions the Bible gives for ob taining forgiveness of sins eternal life and an indwelling Saviour believed the historical facts about Christ as recorded in the Bible have confessed my sin to Him and asked Him to come into my life to be my Lord and Master On the authority of John 112 and Revelation 320 rest assured In daily life Ive proved this Christian life really works Im proud of my Saviour and am en joying the life He came to give Check your diet spiritual weight watcher Maybe what you have is not spiritual eter nal life Maybe you havent followed Gods directions COLDWATER NEWS By SHIRLEY JENNETT COLDWATER Interested parents were in attendance recently as panel consisting of Mrs Vera Bullen Mrs Susan Clarke and Dr Cor mode discussed the topic ef fective parenting Organizers of the evening session included Murray Cleland Grade 56 teacher at Moonstone school and Robert Wilson principal of Coldwater Public school The speakers were arranged for and introduced by Adrian MacKeigan program super visor Georgian College Orillia campus Mrs Bullen who teaches in the psychology section of the nursery school workers program at Georgian College dealt mainly with children of age to the age at which they unconsciously learn the most She felt the attitude of adults toward the child was most im portant in the early years since the child instinctively sensed attitudes Even few weeks before birth they could affect childs nervious system child should not continually experience tasks at which they will have much difficulty or fail since this leads to distress frustration and eventually aggression Parents should avoid penalizing continuously reject the deed but let the child know you still accept him Mrs Bullen quoted Toronto psychiatrist Dr Cham berlaip when she left parents with the thought Better parents make mistakes but do something rather than do nothing NURSERY SCHOOL Mrs Susan Clarke who is founder and supervisor of the Sunshine cooperative nursery school in Orillia concentrated more on nursery school age children She said it was very important to help children build positive image of themselves and to nurture childs poten tial for selfdevelopment and selfconfidence Parents should try to modify childs undesirable behavior in positive manner as opposed to negative one child needs to be taught responsibility for his own behavior and problems should be discussed mutually rather than adultdominated Adults should comment constructively or not at all It is important to be consistent Throughout her address Mrs Clarke stressed positive han dling and sincerity She stated that although It would not always be the easiest course the rewards would be worth the effort Dr Cormode pediatric1an from Orillia spoke in lighter vein as he related many in teresting often amusing in cidents in his relationships with children mainly his own Dr Cormode has found that 20 per cent of the children brought to his office are there because of behavioral problems He feels every child is born with the same potential for good behavior and that problems begin in the first hours of life Children need guidance and some restrictions but aggressive handling usually leads to aggressive children Children often assume the role of what parents expect so if you frequently refer to your child as spoiled or bad they may well become just that Following break for coffee questions were directed to the panel and some problems such as eating habits working mothers
