I8The Barrie Examiner Wednesday March 24 I976 Olympic security tighter MONTREAL CP 16 000man police and military Olympic security force has been put together to avert repeat of massacre at the Olympic Games in Munich in which Israeli athletes were killed by terrorists Guy Toupin assistant director of the Montreal Urban Community police force and co ordinator of the chief com mittee on public safety for the Olympics told news con ference Tuesday the security force will be able to handle anything from disaster to catastrophe Despite the size of the force none of the police or military officers attending the com mittees first news conference could offer any guarantees against recurrence of the Munich terrorist raid which left 17 dead including 11 Israeli athletes There is always risk MaiGen Roland Reid chief coordinator of the military support team said The only way to be 100per cent sure nothing happens is to tell everybody to stay home PLAN FOR 16000 The Canadian armed forces will have 16000 men and women involved in the Olympic effort MaiGen Reid said Of those 5650 will be peace offi cers directly involved with se curity duties The role of military officer on security detail will be as supporting unit for the police forces he said The RCMP will have 1500 men and woman handling wide range of duties including the protection of dignitaries and athletes and their en tourage as well as closer sur veillance of airports and border crossings RCMP Com missioner Maurice Nadon said The commissioner said sev eral dignitaries will be visiting Montreal for the Games al though their exact number has not yet been determined While Mr Toupin said the public should be prepared for strict security measures at the various Games sites MaiGen Reid said they would not be concentration regional expansion committee released Tuesday that despite provin cial efforts the large urban areas of the south continue to grow at the expense of the rural and northern areas Population in the Toronto dis trict was still growing more rapidly than in other regions of the province In the 19711974 period the population of To ronto district grew 64 per cent while in northwestern Ontario there was almost no growth at all Some northern cities like Thunder Bay and Sudbury were thriving but average personal income throughout the northern region was below the national average The department
