After their eventful visit to Holland where they par ticipated in hectic in temational hockey tournament members of Simcoe Countys three teams of Oldtimers are due back home this weekend message from veteran hockeyist George Ford said the travelling Orillia players and executives are scheduled to land at Toronto airport tomorrow and they hope to get home to Orillia in time for Sunday night dinner celebration The former pro who has travelled thousands of miles during some 25 years of playing hockey including 15 in pro ranks described the Holland venture as the highlight en joyed my trips to California and across Canada in pro hockey but the Holland flight was dif ferent he said It is something well remember as long as we live The scenery it self was magnificent Except in the first game when they swamped the Raak team from Holland to the tune of 15 to Ford was leading sniper and playmaker for the Orillia hockey veterans He scored two when the team went down to to St Catharines from Holland and made assists for two im portant goals in hardfought to triumph over Newfoun dland Another exBarrie per former Billy Burtch netted the winning marker in that game Burtch registered the tying goal as Orillia played 2all draw with Nova Scotia The team lost to to Peter borough area squad at The Hague for record of two wins two losses and tie in five games Twelve years have passed since he played pro hockey but he performed for Orillia and Barrie seniors before tem porarily retiring four seasons ago At 45 years he was lured back to perform for the Orillia Oldtimers in Holland It took more effort to get in to shape but believe it did me good he remarked pointing out he dropped 10 pounds in rounding himself into condition Tipping the scales at 188 pounds Ford flashed some of his oldtime skating speed But followers of the Orillia Old timers talked more about Georges sizzling shot which made him leading scorer in the teams pretrip exhibition games MORE THAN ALL 1000 PRO GAMES During his pro hockey career Ford participated in some 1045 games and it was estimated he played another 360 in amateur played lot of hockey since played junior with Barrie in 1948 he commented with smile The Balmy Beach native was just 17 when he joined Leighton Hap Emms junior team which reached the Memorial cup finals Ray Gariepy Red Favero Paul Meger and Rusty Aikin were among his illustrious team mates After leaving Barrie the sharpshooting right winger per formed for Guelph juniors before moving up to pro in the old American league Six busy seasons were spent with Springfield Indians and he also was with Pittsburgh Hornets for season Other pro seasons were spent in the Western Canada loop mostly with Win nipeg and Vancouver In the American league he played against such former Barrie stars as Leo Labine and Real Chevrefils Asked who he considered the best coach he ever played for the wing stalwart reflected moment and then replied would say learned the most from Hap Emma and King Clancy Alf Pike who coached me at Winnipeg also was ex ceptional George rated veteran Gordie Howe as the best allround player he had ever seen per form In answer to other questions he said he con sidered modern hockey players as good as their predecessors but acknowledged the talent is spread out more than in the era when there were only six NHL teams In summing up he said he had intended to give up playing hockey few years ago but wasnt sorry he returned to ac tion with the Oldtimers But after this Holland trip intend to give up playing for good he said adding quickly he would continue to be an enthusiastic fan His other major sport interest is golf and currently George is chairman of the Balmy Beach summer golf tournament com mittee The sixth annual event of the latter has been booked for Lake St George course in the northeast part of the county inJune FELTIS RINK COMPETING FOR TITLE Gil Feltis Barrie rink will be the centre of local attention at the Imperial Life junior Tankard finals for the provin cial championship at the Barrie curling club on Monday and Tuesday The Barrie rink which also includes such local curling stalwarts as John Graham Scott Ribalkin and Ian Scarth will be one of eight in the battle for the Ontario Curling Association honors formerly known as the Thomas Rennie trophy junior competition This year the Imperial Life banner goes to the victor period goals put Flyers in front For two periods Napanee Comets felt they had formula to control the explosive firepower of the Barrie Flyers Comets went out early to greet Flyers deep in their own and pestered their passing game with steady forechecking But Comets couldnt keep it up That is not for three solid periods The third period went to Flyers who scored three unan swered goals to defeat Comets 53 and take the opening game of the best of seven quarter finals of the Ontario Hockey Association OHA Senior playoffs Second game is in Napanee Sunday with return to the Barrie Arena Thursday Last nights game played before an estimated 800 at the Barrie Arena was sharp con tradiction to the last encounter between these two teams Flyers won that contest easily 71 to clinch first place of the senior league Fourthplace Comets forced Flyers into making mistakes in the opening two periods and held 32 lead heading into the last period We checked very well for two periods said Comets coach Walter Gerow after the game They made couple of mistakes and we got couple of goals In the third period they Flyers kept forcing and we held back little too much Bob Baird Jim Thompson and Don Pagnutti secured the win for Barrie with third period goals Pagnuttis marker was an empty net goal with 40 seconds left in the game Paul Regan and Doug Acomb latched onto goals in the first and second prised of president Tony Palumbi vicepresident Wayne Forbes and secretary treasurer Bill Symes Mr Ray will assume the position of pastpresident In charge of scheduling will be John Bureau The brisk dicsuission that followed touched on the proposed schedule playing fields umpiring and an amend ment to the constitution in volving maintenance of the leagues recreational status All indications are for another banner year as nine teams were represented The league plans to operate on 10 team two division system with an interlocking schedule Seven of last years 10 teams have shown definite
