aha 12i The Dorrie Examiner Thursday Mqrch 18 I976 0N SN WM OBI IN HSA launches major program By NEIL MITCHELL HSA Finance Chairman Huronia Snowmobile Association and its 41 member clubs have launched most ambitious trail program this winter The program is designed to establish approximately 2200 miles of public snowmobile trails in Simcoe County for next seasons snowmobiling Trails are being mapped and prepared as quickly as possible when land permissions are granted Land permissions are coming in at steadier rate now and all clubs are busy on trail development More snowmobile club members are required if this public system is to be successful Large play areas are ap pearing on growing trail maps These play areas are where club members will jom Wllh other clubs to enjoy cookout con tests of skills and just plain old fashioned fun New snowmobile crossing signs have appeared on major highways this winter These signs tell the motorist that he or she should be careful of snowmobile crossing area ahead Likewise the snowmobiler has signs to watch as well STOP meansjust that provincial government took in $541000 for licensing last yeai wait until it isf Approximately 50 people lost their lives snowmobiling this year Almost 100 per cent lost their lives while travelling on roads small percentage lost their lives while crossing frozen lakes or rivers not one life has been lost while travelling on snowmobile trails with snowmobile club Do you belong to snowmobile club Lets look at it Mem bership costs $10 $15 Meetings to keep you informed are once month Club activities are usually once week You as single member are entitled to one vote As family member you have vote from each and every member of your family The families do control snowmobiling in your area If you must travel on roads in your area causing added risk to your family its probably because you dont belong to snowmobile club and were unable to vote on trail system Snowmobile tubs can first of all offer you low cost safety dancing boating etc etc its up to you For membership in snowmobile club in your area call Maisie Mitchell Secretary of HSA at 72269290 One of the major problems facing the HSA is that of finances Money must be used for bridge building trail signs and culver ts Trails are groomed by equipment that costs nearly $3000 each and there are seven of them Insurance and operating costs of this equipment are heavy Days weeks and months of man hours have been put into this public trails system by snowmobile club members The trail bridge and culvert you now travel over was put there by your local snowmotnle club The picture of snowmobiling in Simcoe ounty has changed somewhat from what it started out to be It would appear that snowmobile clubs in their determination to trail themselves from the roads have become the free work horses of public trails system Financially there are little in centives for the snowmobile clubs if you consider that the provincial government took in 3541000 for licensing last year for snowmobiles and handed out only 5315000 grant this year for snowmobiling purposes Incentives for snowmobile club are high in manv ways but the obstacles re in any The $334M grant for snowmobiling purposes this winter has only just been received by the HSA to finance snowmobilers and their trail system from last September to the present would suggest that The finance system for snowmobile trails is inadequate The amount of money spent by the province on trails system for snowmobiling purposes is disgraceful That the trails system money is distributed to the snowmobile clubs at an improper tim of the season Keep in mind that suggest these items knowing that ap proximately 50 fellow snowmobilers are not present Other means of financial support or assistance may have to be sought to support part of the trails system if the HSA is to accomplish their trail program It is very possible that part of the public trail system may be abandoned or that part of the trail system be supported by private concerns With so many other public systems being sup ported 100 per cent by government funds it is most difficult to support selffinancing sport like snowmobiling Please join snowmobile club in your area we need your support if the many people have talked to have heard said was g0lng t0 mean call lh€m and yeah guess should Do it now call 72097390 We will direct you to the club in your area Get involved Get off the roads get with it Barrie Raceway results WEDNESDAY MARCH 13 lm pure mr 5359 IJtpill R01 Swat lflgfl chili along with the HSA through the assistance of the local ministry of natural resources at Midhurst stand with regards to properly groomed and signed trail system lll Simcoc ounty The first step of the operation is that at the Association level We have Trail oiiimittcc Will chairman secretary treasurer along with several miic men who are given each an area of the county Each of these men have scvcral clubs in their area to look after and their job is three ted to link their section of trail to the next clubs section All this having been accomplished lllt matter of building bridges and gates goes into effect to make safe trail system Signs are posted similar to road signs along with arrows to direct the snowniobilcr along the proper area The whole trail system is iii Sutid by the Association for the protcctioii of both the lan downcr and the snow mobilcr lp to this point many hours of volunteer labor havc been put in as no one gcts paid III the organiiition except the t11 groomer operators that nor mally work 10 hour week on the trails grimming and keeping the trail in good order or making changes where necessary such as trimming the iindcrhiush or removing ob staclcs piitliiig up new signs etc There are some clubs grooming trails in their own area They will receive sonn financialaidtodothis As you can well imagine thcsc trails the main ones at least have no real beginning or cndmg as they extend con tiinionsly to blend into the next muntys trail system As you read on you will see where vou could go because of snow coir ditions to the north east and west of lluionia on groomed trails The trails as we have them so tar extend from Fern Resort towards Minden and south towards Lagoon ity on the east side of Lake Simcoc You also could start at Severn Falls pass close to trillia and head on towards liass Lake and southwest towards and llllotllt lownship lty the time you read this the trail may be complete to the Harrie area as very little is needed to tie into another trail that you could get out to at liradford at the south end of the county and proceed north to illlttlfl Letroy Alcona Stioiid llolly Barrie Midliur st where the rillia Barrie trail While quantities last On sale from Mar 17th to Mar 20th It rav ï¬t Winter is still very much with us Snowmobile trails remain in stable condition with reports indicating the trails themselves are in good shape The lluronia Snowmobile Association USA has grown as the recognized voice of snowmobiling in Simcoe County Each season new clubs come under the wings of the IISA As winter slowly releases its grip on the area trail con ditions will begin to deteriorate rapidly With the assistance of snowmobile clubs in the area Bay International Communications SA The Barrie Examiner has com piled map of the county showing whereabouts prominent clubs and num bers to call in case of an emergency This assistance list will be updated Jan I977 By ARI OWDEN Bombardier Barrie Ontario Huronia Snowmobile Association was born Jan 16 1973 The initial meeting when the HSA was formed saw five clubs represented as of this date there are 39 snowmobile clubs in the HSA This is an indication of the in terest and hard work of in terested people in Simcoe Coun ty There are now approximately 500 miles of groomed marked snowmobile trails in Simcoe County These trails were developed in part by the min stry of natural resources and the II These trails are representative of 90 per cent volunteer work by members The IISA in 1973 received in vestment money from the provincial government 531500 for this the SA is thankful This investment money was used in the county to pay for materials required to develop the trail system There is more money required to defray costs this money is supplied by the HSA The cost of maintaining each mile of trail in the county is approximately $100 per season am puzzled by the lackadaisical attitude of the municipal governments in Sini me ounty toward the develop merit of the snowmobile trail York Stock original Swiss Fondue 0r enjoying thick New system Huronia is advertised as tourist mecca winter and sum mer yet there has been very little if any aid in any form given the HSA by the municipalities in Simcoe The complacency of the coun ty regarding this extension of the tourist mecca is only mat ched by the complacency of the majority of snowmobilers in the county The HSA has approximately 6000 individual members yet there are 14000 snowmachines registered in the county No consideration has been given to visitors to the area from the Golden Horseshoe Extending the money spent in this county by these 14000 snowmachine owners we see figure of $6000000 spent each year This figure does not take into account the sale of new or used machines or the money spent by visitors coming in to benefit from the HSA trail system The HSA has had to overcome tremendous obstacles in developing this trail network There is the attitude of the provincial government regar ding the definition of public trail This definition removes all incentive for individual snowmobilers to join clubs The fact is one can pay the $10 licence and ride the trails free No effort no support and little cooperation It follows that the HSA needs the help of municipalities in the county The HSA is by their persistence overcoming the problems of the past such as trespass noise and the en vironment There is no doubt in my mind that they will continue to do so The HSA has established as part of their total operation search and iescue units within the county remember the storm of April 1975 They were most welcome at that time This is not meant to be tirade or complaining at titude against people or groups within the county This is reminder that the HSA is well organized responsible organization incorporated as legal entity that is not being supported in the manner that it deserves Horseshoe Volley Cordiolly Invites You To Their New Dining Lounge Whether Sipping your favorite
