for Heritage Day skiathon plans keep Barrie Kinsmen members busy The next two weeim will be busy ones for the Kinsmen Club of Barrie as members ask re sidents to be proud to be Can adian and to support cam paign against cystic fibrosis Feb 16 will be celebrated as Heritage Day in Canada and while Canadas Parliament has not yet recognized the day as an official holiday the govern ment asked the Kinsmen the on ly allCanadian service club to lead the festivities llhe day was originally going to be called Flag Day and be celebrated on Feb 15 in recog nition of the day Canada receiv ed her own flag With grants from the federal gavernment the club is promot ing the day across the country and carrying out special activi ties at the local level The Barrie club was limited in its promotion by its previous commitment to the Barrie Win ter Carnival its Bavarian night dance is being considered as joint venture promoting the carnival and Heritage Day On Monday night the club will hold card be con sidered when electing the win ner from each grade SKIATHON On Feb 21 the club is asking all cross country ski cnthus lusts to lake to llIQ snow at Moisons at liniric III 25milc skiathon for cystic fibrosis This is the second year the club has sponsored the skiathon which is the only one of its kind in Canada PartICipants receive pledges for certain amount per mile and then ski as many of the 25 miles as they can The day will open with free pancake breakfast at the park and registration will take place between 830 and 1030 am The course will be set ahead of time and will include gra dual upgrade from the park to the fifth line of Innisfll In In nisfil the participants will turn around and come back Last year participants began at the park and finished at an other point 50 miles later The club has decided to reduce the distance and have the trail start and finish It the same location There will be checkpoints long the route as wall as food and beverages Pcoplc carrying citizcns band radios will patrol the route and skiers dropping out will be taken back to the start Last year the skiathon at tracted 120 participants and rais ed $3500 This year the club IS hoping to
