physically and she likes to work mostly alone And she loves the smell of Wood While Heather would like to help build house or two after she finishes her course her main interest lies in the intric ate and time consuming field of cabinet making She has great deal of pat ience with the fine intricate work of building and is looking for muaurnnnfh ma not yvuAAa CARE patience and inter est in the fine details of woking with wood are car pentry student Heather Keiths strong points While she would like to work on the construc T1ie chance of creating drew women to carpentry ward to the chance of taking turn to Bell Canada where she an apprenticeship with good has worked holorc craftsman Before entering the program Heather taught school in Lab rador and after leaving her school returned to this area be cause her family lives in the area and after living in isola tion didnt feel she was ready to cope with the big city life While the reception of her teach21s and fellow Iassmates has been good Heather could not sy the same of the Canada Manpower Centre which refers the majority of students to the program THE STUMBLING BLOCK Manpower was the stumbling block she said saying it be came quite evident to her that the job counsellor did not want to put woman in the prog ham While applying she was told to either go back to teaching or to take one of the bookkeeping or stenogravphic courses Lynda said she also met with some resistance but met less hardship because Heather had already broken the ice Lynda was encourang to rc tion houer tor while Hoa ther would prefer in the long run to enter the craft of cabinet making Although she is qualified teacher Heath er chose carpentry because Carpentry is not heavy work like masonry Lynda said and lifting plank of wood is no heavier than carrying her three ycarold daughter Lynda chose carpentry for much the same reasons as ea ther She likes to work with her hands and working outdoors At first she would like to build log cabin which she did be fore with her husband Then she would like to work on house car peniry but not the mass sub division type Lynda would prefer to work someplace where she could take her daughter with her for she doesnt like putting her in day care She would also like to work with an older independent carpenter whom she can learn from Both girls found they faced little difficulty being accepted by their teachers or follow stu dents lhcy have also been ac cepted by the public many of whom find their work facinat ing There are however the scep tics who insist no one will even hire female
