suLficient we here to em phasize traffic law enforcement It has been clearly demonstrated that when enforcement increases dc cidents go down liu Public must not only accept added vigilume they must support it if we are to live with lhis motor vehicle All the freedoms and privilegesl that are ours to enjoy depend upon law and its enforceman Withoutl enfuxumcnt the law is ineffectual Traffic law enforcement of good quality is so important to the well being Of the whole community in order to bring about orderly and economic street and highway tran sportzilion The vulucof this enforcement is mnlcriully increased when police cnforcrmcnt action includes the in telligent and wide use of written warnings and the giving of instruc tion to pedestrians and drivers We can do so much to nmke it in pence and happiness This is no drcmncrs ideal it is substantial and proven fact Enforcement must be in the vanguard OI the attack to produce reduction in III fatalin mic We are not self sufficient We depend great deal upon engineer ing education and adjudication However we have the responsibil ity to do our part in the program to reduce the accident experience in the Province Let us then do our level best to keep down the death toll on the road this Christmas time by seeking orderliness and safety of move ment amongst the people who at this time of year are so prone to overlook ordinary caution Jury Duty For Women Democratic Kiwanis Speaker Jury duty for women is funda mental to our concept of democ racy declared Miss Mildred Mele dith past resident of the Barrie Business and Professional Womens Club addressing the Kiwanis Club at their Dec 15 dinner meeting at Community Hone Any jury needs womans view and some of us believe that jury service for women mshould be Obligatory Miss Meredith gave an enlight ening talk on Jury Duty For Wo men which comes into effect in Ontario in January 1953 Although the amendment to the Jurors Act came into effect Jan 1952 it was not practical to start for one year because voters lists had ready been repared The speaker listed the three types of juries in Ontario Grand Jury 13 selectedcitizens had the duty of hearing part or all of Crown evidence and to decide if it was sufficient for accused to stand trial in Open court They had to decide if True Bill was correct This is part Of our British sys tem of fair play the seaker point ed Out Grand Jury has also the duty of insecting public institu tions and making recommendations as they see fit Here is one reason why some men Oppose having women on jury Miss Meredith said Wo men are likely to send lot more money on paint and cleaning ma terials The Petlt Jury or Trial is charged wtih the duty of hearing evidence but does not impose the penalty which is for the Judge In clles all 12 jurors must agree in civil cases 10 The coroners jury of five people is called to enquire lnto circum stances of violent death and to make report and recoaniida tion Thereare some obstaclesdo jury duty for women woman may notify the sheriff within three days and claim exemptionrfor one year Actually it is voluntary ser vice for women now althdugh not to men who must serve when calf Exemptions to jury duty for both menand women fall in 22 categories The Speaker listed the reasons behind Some but did not like dimme MEMMiucr 5A thomson agree that all were necessary She
