after the night before the week after the week before Last week part of the Christmas examinations was held and the remaining part will be held from Dec 17 to Dec 19 The other reason for the pre valllng quiet is the fact that our BDCl Band is playing at the Na tional MidWest Band Clinic in Chicago But more about that trip later Holland Import Here is the rst in the series of features have been promising to youmews about the views of stu dents who have attended schools outside of Ontario First on the Lst is Jana Wisman blonde blueeyed girl from Holland Jane comes from the northern part of Holland from lleercnvecn in Friesland While living in her native country she attended high schoolcalled ULO or Ullgebreid lager Ondcrwys This school is about the same size as our BDCI and has an enrolment of about 1000 students JANE wrsmu The sellool hours however are different to ours school starts at slut AGENCY mucrrxxxuuaviqui THE lliWAle New YearsEve Vlad lion MllSlllllCIIllll OWEN smug The subjects they took in her former school were Dutch Ger man muss French science slac bra geometry health art music and RT According to Juno schools are border in Rolland and the students have three times as much homework as we havedust think of that Another interesting fact she told me concerns the changing of class es Instead of students moving from class to class in Holland the teachers change rooms Once year the UL puts on social evening where the glee club and school orchestra present sel ections and there are demonstra tions of various kinds of dances There are three types of high schools in Holland The rst Is trade school which would corres pond to our technical schools Then there is the academy which teaches course similar to our academic course The third type of secondary school is for advanc cd education for those planning to attend university or become doc tor lawyer or minister Youll be wondering what type of clothing is worn by school children in Holland Dutch child ren wear clothes similar to ours but during the recent war when leather shoes were scarce wooden shoes were worn Jane explains that these are made by hand or by machine from one piece of wood Several pairs of Woollen stockings are worn inside the shoes or there are special leather socks had to get used to wear ing these shoes but eventually found them to be quite comfort able On special occaslpus the Dutch national costume is worn National Sport In Canada we consider hockey our national sport but In Holland its football There is no ice hock ey because the climate is damp Eldisfbumnlo CANADA FRIDAY DECEMBER i2 l952 Wits Snowplowsllrst Appearance at Miners much the same as the English cli mate There is great deal of snow but it disappears very quickly The boys and girls play both basketball and volleyball as we do in Canada but they have outdoor ice skating By this mean skating on the canals The skates are wooden platform with an iron blade and are tied on the feet Quite often skating trips are hel and the boys and girls skate fro town to town on the canals These canals are all over Holl and and some of those around Heereuveen Janes town are as wide as our own Elizabeth St They are used as highways and some are large enough to accom modate ships The country around Heerenveenis at and very much like our Holland Marsh south of Barrie Because of this fact there is no skiing around that dlstrict CLUB or am rnlzrs Vans ONLY LIMITED NUM BER or TICKETS AVAIL THE FIRST SNOWPLOW TRIP of the season so far as known was made on Sun day Nov 30 by Lorne che garage operat or who has done the plowing each winter at Nudewa Mlnets Point and number of other sec but there is skiing Holland Teenage activities in Heeren veen consist of gym clubs where the PT classes of the schools are extended and dancing clubs where the teeners learn tangos waltzes and many other types of dances In Holland they have more danc lng instruction and more opportun ities to dance than we have in Canada To roundout the activi ties there areLBrownies Guides Cubs and Scouts Dutch Christmas Something that interests us all at this time of year is the Dutch Christmas legend On Dec Saint Nicholas the saint of Spain comes on big white ho ho boat from Spain He wears white gown witba long red velvet ro and hood and carries cane shaped like shepherds staff He has little helper called Black Pete who has black face and wears black stockings and striped rompers StNlcholas riding on his white horse and little Black Pete walk ing beside him go around the townfrom dob to door giving out presents to everyone And on the same day they go across roof tops ou the white horse and drop presents down the chimneys The children hang their stockings up near the replace and leave their wooden shoes lled with straw and some water for the white horse On Dec 25 the Dutch people celebrate Kerstmis and have Christmas tree and givegifts to their relatives in western ABLE lite Ray Uviugstondmug
