he lllliston Manager Elated With Team WHILE THERE HAS been considerable rejoicing among Alliston baseball fans generally no onewas more pleased over the succus of the Canucks in win ning the Simcoe County baseball league honors than Bob Doner senior known in Aliiston as Mr Baseball The wellknown insurance manls not only man agcr of the champions but also one of its most enthus iastic supporters both in rosy times like the present and also when the breaks go against the club We Were naturally very happy he answered simply when asked how he felt about the chem lonshlp Then With more enthusiasm he added he eve our coach Ah Ian Edgar and all our players deserve great deal of credit They all did well and we are proud of them ALLISTONS UPHILL FIGHT in taking the hon ors has been bringing wellmerited congratulations from every part of the Illeiub count league including officials of clubs which battled wi the Cunucks as the keenest of rivals Manager Doner said the county title was the first for Ailiston he could remember and hes been resident for 22 years But we didwrn the South Simcoe honors in 1966 and the Knights won it in 1965 he reminded The victory of the Canucks smashed monopoly held by Orjllia Majors for the past four years Before that Midland Indians were fairly consistent wrnnersof the county honors and for while it appeared they might come into the championship picture again this year until the Canucks demolished their hopes While Manager Doner was uiidoubtediy right in giving main credit for Allistons remarkable success to fine team effort there were individual stars Bob Doner lr was not only leadin pitcher in the league with eight games won against ee losses but he and Gary Smokum came through in brilliant fash ion in the finals Doner pitched 31 twohitter vic tory in addition to being the winning pitcher in the 130 finale over the Midlandlndians which wrapped up the championship Smokum hurled 30 shutout victory at Midland and also was the winning pitcher for the opening 43 win He had to he at his best for the former because he was pitted against the phenomenal Gordon Dyment who has demonstrated he has lost little of his itching skill at 37 Dyment blanked Alliston 30 for dlaiids only win of the series the veteran onetime pro giving up only one hit DONER SMOKUM AND PAUL MASON were the mainstays of the Alliston pitching staff throughout the season with Dave Mortimer called upon on occasion Mike Fairburn also made couple of pitching appear ances First sacker Wayne Storey and Smokum have been leading hitters in aveiages during the regular season wtih third sacker Ray Thibeht rising touthe heights at the plate during playoffs Ray hit the ball at close to 700 rate against Beeton and also was exoeptiqnal in the Thornton series Dave Mortimer an outfielder who can pitch or play any infield position wasthe leading home run hitter Bill Edgars ability at handling pitchers also was of material help in enabling the Canucks to come through Along with Mortimer John Morrison Dave Evans John Bowermanand John Heydon performed capably inthe outfield Brian Brooks also was good flyhawk and batter who was missed after he was injured in the Thornton series The determination and battling spirit which an abled Alliston to win out the hard way is reflected by the records The team finished in thirdplace tie with Midland in the regular schedule with 14 WInS10 losses and three ties Ivy Leafs finished first and Ma jors second Midland had one less loss than Alhston but were tied in points iNTHE PLAYOFFS the Canucks had to battlefol the wire to oust Thornton three games to two and it was the same against Beeton in another exciting ser ies The other finalist team Midland Indians who eliminated Ivy in hardfought semifinal went out the easiestfor the new champions The fine showing of the Allistoncinbarid the new floodlights for the hall diamond at Riverdale Park has assured 1968 going down intotherecord as an out standing baseball year for Mayor John Darlings town While they are out insofar as county competition is concerned Midland Indians are still very much in the OBA picture In fact they can take the intermedi atc OBA championship by winning athowmanville tomorrow afternoon With public school teacher Chester Graham pitch ing threehit ball Midland took the tiurd game of the best threeoutoffive final at Midland 40 rhubarb inthe second frame saw Midland catcher Terry Moore ejected from the game ANOTHER SIMCOE COUNTY league team all in the hunt for an OBA title Creemoreited Sox travelled
