over cam palgn details Examiner Pho to Objective Is $12000 In Cancer Campaign April or Daffodil month is Cancer Monththe month set aside each year by the Canadian Cancer Society to campaign for funds The objective this year for the Barrie and District Unit of the Society is to help as many as possible oLttIe one in four Canadians who are stricken by cancer and to reach the other three so they can be told the symptoms of this dread disease and told the importance of early diagnosis and treatment WELFARE SERVICES The Units objective is to pro vide welfare services for all cancer patients 65 per cent of whom fall into the over 60 age groupthe group composed of mostly pensioners and poor who could never afford the cost ly treatment and therapy that cancer victim must have The objective is to bring com fort to these people and their families to provide home nurs ing care housekeeper services needed drugs rehabilitation aids and many many other ser C95 fourth objective is to sup ply research scientists with bad iylneeded equipment and mater Iil But all this will cost great deal of money To realize their objectives this year the Barrie Unit must raise $12000 This is only part of thetotal that Ontario Division Units will raise and only fraction of the eventual national goal of $3519000 This money must be raised but it has to come from the public from the people who may have to defend themselves against cancer some day in the future UNDER TREATMENT This year about 70000 Cana dians will be under treatment for cancer there will be about 45000 new cases diagnosed for the first time in 1940 the number of cancer deaths per 100000 population was 122 in 1950 it was 128 by 1960 it had risen to 130 and much of the increase in men was due to lung cancer in 1960 about 93200 Co nadians died of cancer 480 were under 15 years of age of every six deaths from all causes in Canada one was caused by coal ccr more men than WDIIIEII are affected the ratio being about 54 men to 46 women Cancer presents one of the greatest medical challenges of the 20th Century This chall enge is being met by the com bined efforts of hundreds of thousands of volunteers in diff erent countries of the world in Canada the effort is directed through the society The society is the only national voluntary health agency fighting cancer through research education and service to patients its sole source of funds is voluntary gifts from the public collected during this annual April cam palgn RESEARCH Because only through re search can oaacer ever be com Variation In Evidence Brings Acquittal In society is concentrating more and more on support of research This year it will spend ottoman for this purpose Education plays large role in the story of the war on can cer as well Unless men and women know what to look for and what to do about it ignor ance and fear will continue keeping people from seeing their doctors until it is too late Possibly half of all the pew pie who develop cancer could he saved it they reached doc tor soon enough So the society hos published these seven dan ger signals Unusual bleeding or dis charge lump or thickening in the breast or elsewhere sore that does not heat Change in bowel or bladder habits Persistent hoarseness or cough indigestion or difficulty in swallowing Change in wart or mole thorough medical examina tion can be tremendously re assuring
