BARBIE EXAMINER MONDAY ARCH 12 truism non1s Another World On Gulf Shore By 1163 FLORIDA Our Florida story this time takes us about 125 miles across slate from our home to corner that seems to be in another world from the development pushing big money and plush advertising communities it is called Cedar Key and is only little over twenty miles from the high way that circles the Gulf of Mexico over which thousands of motorists coming and going from southern Florida pass daily The Gulf of Mexico north of Tarpon Springs lirps against swampy shore except where there is an outcrop of islands or an inlet where river empt lcs There is no road along the shore and the few settlements at the gulfside are reached by road leading in from little highway It was once frontier town and the first railway across the state had its western terminal on the island just acmss the in let It crossed the sounds from the mainland on tresles bet ween at least four islands and the port was very sheltered spot which afforded protection needed when the big gulf blow into fastrising storm such has taken lives even this past week The rails have gone now and it appears the highway is now located on some of the rightof way The island on which the depot and wharfs were located were abandoned when hurri cane blew down most of the homes and commercial build ings What could be salvaged was moved back to Way Key or island Now the community has population of five or six hundred and some new com mercial development is in pro gess replacing the large factor ies which for years made pen cils from the virgin cedar that was there in such abundance hundred years ago The railway arrived in these boys about 1060 and commer cial development followed in its wake Shipments of cotton fish pencil products and fruit went mm here to the eastern LLT minus at Femanuiua lpoit of present Jacksonville ii ships took freight to leans and Havana Wlitia the railway had difficult in getting enough financial to ing to build it became ing investment for some years However the start of the Civil War put crimp in the cot marcial aspects and it thousands of routhcv towns Cedar Key became lav volved with Union and contort crate tmopl and in way life soon changed Eeeo that in 1392 the town was Ieltl raise to and the port under blockade Ships war on or burned and hip one is recorded as etaway Cattle colored slaves were to serve the Uni This then was the end of the first era of prosperity for the community it was not until 1870 that in dustry was again established and shipments of cotton pen cedar giant turtles and tur pentine were being made By 1085 the towns population had creased to nearly 5000 and Mo pencil mills were in opera tion However conservation was an unknown word and the idea of replacrng the cedar was never thought of By 1890 only about 1200 people remained at the Key and by 1096 the our tain was down on the lumber in dustry and the oyster beds had been ravrshed cedar is land was abandoned and the railway no longer went there while the Eagle and Faber pen companies sold their hold ings However fishing romain ed as an industry Oyster beds have made com back although when we visited Cedar Key during the high winds that have made head lines the boats were unable to go out so we did not anticipated oyster feed the population had dwi little over 800 and those who stayed made living in diver sified ways including fishing The railway folded up in 1932 and the company removed the rails and rolling stock inland to ailway graveyard where heaps of this material that has not been hauled away as scrap is rustrngaway in the sun Our vrsrt to Cedar Key had been prompted by guest from MontrealIWhohad read story which painted glowing of the way of life fishing luck that visit it We enj and it was most although there and the he wanted to oyed our stay surprising that some development had picture been started nothing much seemed to be happening to it Survey stakes are to be seen but only one or two houses are built unlike other parts of Flor ida whore houses spring up like mushrooms We were fortunate in finding that the storm had driven sev eral sponge boats into the har boar These men descendants of the Greeks who came to Tar pon Springs for sponge fishing work their boats on coopera tive basis and usually return to Tarpon with $3000 load of sponges at the end of their run We watched them treat the part loads they had on board and found them most willing to talk to the inquisitive who asked questions Oi course the storm had riled the sea to such an extent that no fish could be coaxed in close enough to bite and our friend was unrewarded with even nibble sand crabs that our elderly landlady had helped dig had no takers After two nights we were ready to give up The sea which even at high tide did not rise within three feet of its usual height accounted for the swells that inundated some of the southern coast where they are less than two feet above average sea level We visited newly established museum at the Key and talked to many people who all had really happy outlook on life There are several churches in the village The Episcopal Church was twice burned and today they have fire proof building of modern beauty and charm Many artists and writ ers visit the vicinity some of them settling for long periods attracted by the charm of the village and the people Com mercial fishing and oysters are still big business with catches being tnrcked as far away as Jacksonville factory is in operation for canning crabs and putting oysters up for distribu tion to stores Being no fisher man we took our own way of getting fish we bought five pound sea bass for 25 cents pound and it was delicious We could recommend Cedar Key to those who just want to fish and let the world go past it certainly has charms and the local people we found most friendly and full of fascinating yarns Denied In Bond Robbery Case CHICAGO AP Defence motions for
