1797 Governor Slmcoe open ed Yonge Street as far north as Holland Landing Th the route took two courses One lay across Lake Simcoe and through the Narrows to where Orillla now stands and thence by an old Huron trail then still discernible through the forests which later became the Cold watcr Road now Highway No 12 to the waters of Georgian Bay The other proceeded up Cooks Bay round Big Bay Point to the heati oi Kempenlclt Bay thence across the nine mile portage to Willow Creek and to down the Nottnwasaga River to Georgian Bay The second route was the most used sin ce it involved the shortest por tage Then came the war of 1912 15 Three American warships chased the British sloop Nancy into the mouth of the Nottawn saga hiver and no disgrace in that The Nancy was towed by her crew up nld man who February 1615 we find schooh at an unprecedented rate One suds sdtool is remembered seeing the pine trees opposite where the Nancy lies with ther tops broken off by the cannon balls Some say her crew set fire to the Nancy rather than have her captured Another and more likely account is that she was fired by red hot cannon balls from the Am erican ships HARBOR UNSAFE It was apparent that at least in wartime the mouth of the Nottawasaga was not safe harbor Pcnetanguishene harbor larther to the north was safe nndeasily fortified And soélln George Head journeying up new cat road This threat did not materialize Barrie still thrlv and few years later the Rail way in its own interest was compelled to extend its line round the end of the Bay Cum berlan however unwittingly got his revenge The railway with the towns consent was built close to the waters edge thereby shutting all access to one of the finest sand beaches in all Ontario There it remains to this day for no one seems to have the gumption to move it back few rods which Could easily be done RAILWAY MAGIC The earning of the railway wrought magic At long last there was market for timlr er and wood and better mar ket
