Band was first formed in April ot 1958 when an agree ment for loan was agreed upon by the members at the Lot No 432 Allandale and group of our players from the old Sea Cadet numpet Band The agreement was that the lodge would lend the band the needed cash to purchase the used instruments from the Sea Cadets and let them use their Hall for practice at no charge The hand in turn were obligat ed to parade on the twelfth of July parade each year and on two Church Parades but the Lodge was to pay for these engagements Tn 195d the Band consisted at six members four lrumpeters and two drummers This was one at the smallest Trumpet Bonds that has ever been heard oof but it had plenty of spirit and carried on through the yean In 1959 the Band had doubl ed its size and had eight Trumpeters and four Drummers They went into small Band competition in Oshawa Ontario with the first prize cup and ten dollars NEARLY DOUBLE In l960 the Band once again almost doubled its size and consisted of eleven Trumpeters six Drummers Glockenspiel three ltinjorettos and Drum ltlulor This was the first year that they started getting any recognition at all Although they tried several times to win in Band Competitions that year they were not successful in winning any prizes Alter the eleventh ot Novem ber Parade group of inter ested people in Barrie formed committee to try and get uniforms for the children in the Band When the committee was set up it seemed to spark new life into the whole Band At general meeting of the Band that fall the children were told that this winter would either make or break the hand and that it was up to each child to do his and her best this winter and to give Barrie Trumpet Band they could be justly proud of in the next year 79 piece marching unit of boys and girls from the ages of live to sixteen years ot age it includes twentytwo Soprano Tmmpets ten Baritone Trump ets three French llonu Trum pets two Alto Giocltenspieis Soprano Giockensplels Cym bals Sixteen Drummers and lltainrotte Corp oi twenty girls So for this year they have participated in fortysix parade in Barrie and surrounding com munlties The Band has travelled over 2000 miles this year and it now takes fifteen cars to move in 1961 the Band competed in three ditferent Band Competit ions in Lindsay Beaverton and Grand Valley and brought home to Barrie the three first prizes tram each Competition This year they have set up Parents Association to help administer the nilolrs oi the Band and are looking to next year as being bigger and better year than over Try An Examiner Want Ad Society Spices Culture With Horticulture Now The idea oi spieing horticul turn with culture has been luccessiul combination or the Barrie Horticultural Society To accommodate this plan twelve tours were held through out Lho year The first tour was to the Maple Leaf Gardens in February to see the ice Follies The group again made trip to Toronto this time in March to see perinrmance by the National Ballet at the Roy al Alexander An overnight tour to see Rochester In Lilac Time was taken by the group in May DurinthIs trip they took daylong tour of the Rochoster Park system They were guided by the top men trom the Roch ester Parks Commission This tour was especially colorful sin es the bus traveled through the Niagara area which was pink and white with the lam ous cherry blossoms The Society made third trip to Toronto this time in to see the Annual Ross Exhib Itlon sponsored by the Canadian Rose Society The July Lripl destination was StratIord to see the pres entation of Henry Vll at the Shakespearean Festival Three tours were taken In August The first tour was gul ded by Metropolitan Tor onto conservation authority who explained the Toronto conserva tion system trip to St Cath arines and the Port Dalhousie area viewed the Royal Bot an Ical Gardens Gage Park and Stoakes nursery and the green houses at Niagara Falls No bus loads at Society members journeyed to the Can adian National Exhibition to at tend the festivities of Flow er and Music Day trip at the end of Septem her to Moose Lake Lodge at Parry Sound to see the Caval cade oi Color failed because at the late turning of leaves return trip was made in mid October through the Colingwood Vosaga Beach and Eimvnle ar es and was pronounced suc cess The Society went by bus to Toronto In November on two occasions to attendthe Royal Winter Fair and to see the pertormonco of Bye Bye Bird le at the OKeefo Center However all is not fun and play for the society throughout the city The city hall public library Community House Barrie Police building and Federal building received the attention or the society Over 1000 tulip bulbs were planted in new flower bed at the Royal Victoria Hospital The Barrie Parks Board laid out the bed and supplied two loads at loam The Parks Board also purch used $75 worth of tulips to be planted in the gore at Codriag ton and Cook Streets The Central Collegiate rockery was maintained and planted by the Society were the beds at the Clapperlen and Collier Street intersection and Fine Station new gone was plant ed at Cresswood Court RUNNER TUHDAY fl Three proleth are citywide contest convened by Society member Hilton Slers Henry Barnard and his com nittesoonducted decora tion day ceremony at both St Marys and the Protestant carn eteriu Over 00 Cubs in the city of Barrie constructed bird houses to compete in the annual com petition Esch Cubs efforts were rewarded with package seeds and five bulbs The win ning pack received trophy to keep tor one yca plus small
