of Increased enrollm at and increased costs The Barrie and District Col legiate Board is no exception The board which administers Central Collegiate and North Collegiate in Barrie last year finalized plans for at 51425900 expansion project for Central Collegiate BIG PROBLEM This project which will ad vocational wing and on 1100 seat auditorium to Central was one of the biggest problemsl which faced the board year conflict arose between the Barrie and the Township coun cils represented on the board as to the size of the proposed last auditorium Eatrte proposed 1600 seat auditorium and the townships asked for no particul ar seating capacity but specif ied that the project should not cost more than $250000 exclud ing land costs of $54000 After several months of nego tiation plans were approved for 1100 seat scaleddown auditorv mm The vocational wing which will cost more than 31000000 will be paid for largely by govern ment grant It is hoped that the vacation EVEN at wing will be in operation by September of this year but iis depends upon the rate of onstruction The Barrie and District Col legiate Board is composed of 16 members representing Barrie lnnisfii Vespro Orb and Sunni dalc Townships the public school board the epa rate school board and Slmcoe Coun ty Members are appointed for three year terms in the case of Barrie uud from one to two years in the case of the town ships PERSONNEL The 1961 board was chaired by Clifford Lockhart of Innisfil Township By profession ranks of the board members included eight farmers two dentists two merchants clergyman an in surance man and hairdresser in the calendar year 1961 the board administered budget of $9761l0 Major items were debentures 5154000 salaries $626516 transportation $75000 The board leases fleet of 21 school board expects an expansion in enmi lment of about 100 pupils be tween the two schools which may require the hiring of ad ditional teachers In expectation of completion of the vocational wing at Cen and Recreation Services The reason for this is that members of our various Board and Committees thought that Recreation alone did not ad equately describe what we were doing Naturally we are concerned with helping people to develop activities and programs which will he recreative and will give them enjoyment These take in the whole range of spontaneous and physical activities arts and crafts adult education and ser vice projects in order to make these possible however needs to be organization within valves considerable effort the coordination of groups and the fostering of leadership co operation nnd provision of ap propriate facilities We are working with people to accomp llsh this We hope our new name will explain our deeper function more clearly NEW MEMBER Another change has been the addition of new staff memo or Mr Floyd Grieshach no tivo of Simcoe County Many of our rural people will remem ber him as field man and then as director on the Board of the Simcoe County Federation of Agriculture or later as no tionnl secretary of the Farm Radio Forum from 1950 to 1958 Although Floyd has only been with us for the past few months he has already added breadth and strength to our work Again the Federation of Agriculture has shown its inter est inthe development of educ ation for community living by supporting our Boards plan to bring Floyd back to the County We are grateful for the grant received from your Cooperative Activities Committee for this purpose Many small communities in Simcoe County organized swim ming classes day camps and playgrounds this past summer We were drawn in to help with these in various ways from direct supervision of staff and and consultative service Alto gether close to 3500 children were enrolled in summer boli day activities organized various activitiu or skilil boo stressed the grow th of understanding and cru tive ways of working with pa oplc Drama group organization and social recreation workshop have been held Courses for summer leader extended over period of two or three dayl several hockey coaching clinics have been organized to assist there who give training to youngsters in minor leagu es throughout the Country We appreciate the cooperation of Community Programmes Branch in providing financial assistance andor leadership for these training projects Arts and crafts meetings clas ses and Countywide Art Ex hibit have brought together mnnl people of like interests and creative ability We are pleased to not the development of more activity in this field in the local community One example is the Blue Moon tain Arts and Crafts group which now has close to 50 members rural and urban from the northwestern part of the County Among the other interestin events which have claimed our staffs attention this year we
