some giant strides forward in 1961 and indications for this year are that this forward pro gress is continuing One 01 the highlights of the commercial year was the open ing of two multiunit shopping plazas The Barrie West End Plaza located at the junction of Anne Street and Highway 400 is one of the largest one stop shopping areas in Simone County Constructed on 12 acre site carpark facilities site in late fall and at time of writing work has pro gressed to the point where most of the shell of the build Hunters And ilnglers Club Works Often Without Fanfare Barrie District Hunters and Anglers Conservation Club is probably the leastknown organ ization in the city At the same time there are few groups if any that do as much good for the citizens It does so without pomp or ceremony Most of the clubs work is done outside the city limits The work done within the limits is for safety on the outside Maybe confusing con glomeration of words but the value of its work cannot be contested The word conservation means conserving Preserving guarding or protecting The motto of the club is to enjoy protect and replace There isnt member of the club that does not enjoy the outdoois Each member pledges to save and faithfully defend from waste our natural resour ces WORK DONE Every year the club cleans local game fish streams Where it is necessary it stocks waters For the past several years the BDHACC has purchased pheasants which they turn ov er to farmers to raise The birds are eventually furbed lo ose so that hunters may enjoy favorite pastime shooting Shooting gunhandling and maintenance of firearms also come under the heading of dut ies for this club Courses in hunter safety are offered to everyone Teenagers are urged and taught safety and conservation The club hasput up trophy for outstanding work by junior conservationists This includes the building of bird houses and bird feeder stations the takin of the hunter safety course and boating safety course The club members spent many cold winter and summer nights assisting the game wardens in apprehending poachers whether they be hunting or fishing They do much research for the Department of Lands and Forests Everything done by this organ ization is for enjoyment and safety In 1960 Barrie District Hunt ers and Anglers Conservation Club was awarded the Mary Pickford Trophy as the outstand ing conservation club in the province This came on the heels of the clubs choice as tops in its zone The club this year has as its executive the following presid silt Morley Hoffman vicepres ldents plants that have sprung up in the industrial areas in recent years They have found that Barrio has healthy industrial clim ate despite occasional small strikes working conditions are generally good and import ant investors havo found that Barrie and its environs have an excellent source of mnn power for prospective new bus incss and industrial firms Progress is manysided thing in growing community Thus with the development of business and industry one finds frcsh demands for public ser vices and cultural ad vantages Earrie has built many schools in the past is years nnd last year embark ed on major program of high school construction Thc services many people simply take for granted are considered among the finest in the country The Simcoc County health unit offers excellent ser vices Royal Victoria Hospital is one of the most modern and progressive in the province It too is expanding Sometime this year large addition will be added to the hospital to pro vidc muchneeded services Barrics physical progress of coursc cannot be denied It has been said Ihat we are within the Toronto metropolitan area and that we will be part of that great source of econ omic revenues within com paratively short time Premier Sees Bright uture For Dist By HON JOHN ROBAIITS Prime Minister Of Ontario it is great pleasure for me to write few words for the annual Progress Edition of The Barrie Examiner and take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to the residents of Simcoo County who have con tributed so much to the growth of our Province Your proximity to the heavily populatedreg and Southeastern Ontario in ad dition to excellent transportation connections and many natural advantages suggests an even more progrcssive future for manufacturing and agriculture in your area look at population figures shows the extent to which the Simcoe area has developed dur ing the last few years Simcoo County has an estimated popu lation of 130000 an increase of nearly 20 per cent over 1952 Barrie alone has population of about 22000 rise of 60 with the civic election The vote was hel and both Sunday mov ies and Sunday sports were approved by the electorate The request for vote on cocktail lounges was received too late by council to hold vote in conjunction with the civic election but council appro ved the request and asked the Liquor Licensing Board to set date for vote sometime in early 1562 ft is expected that vote will be held early this year placing petition requesting city council to hold vote in conjunction before the voters options on cocktail lounges licensed dining lounges and wine stores ExMayor 0f Barrie Recalls Progress 0f City Over The Years By We recently had an interview with former mayor of Harrie Mr William Blair and talk ed with him about the pro gress of the city since he was chief magistrate William James Blair 7a was mayor of the town of Barrie in 1935 and had previously ser ved on Council for eight years He replaced Mayor Walter Duff and was followgd by May or Robertson At that time there were sev en to eight thousand persons in the town which now has close to 23000 an increase of three times in the urban population Followinghis term as Mayor Mr Blair was on the Planning and Development Board and helped to establish the zoning system after the survey of the town had been made Most of the industries and new schools have come to the town since Mr Blair was in office The business at the Town Hall was handled by clerk and two assistants and tax cof lector We had lot of troub le over taxes at that time as it was during the depression period Mr Blair stated Our Councils workedbard and there seemed lotof matterswblch had to be dealt with by them that are now handledbyataff officials The year 1935 was tough year Chief Stewart was door drill and training facilities and with two constables handl ed the police work Later the policing was handed over to the Provincial Police The railway yards where Mr Blair was chief clerk was busy place with four passenger trains daily between Toronto and here and two trains day to Meaford The Allandale yard was busy compared with the present time even though it was during the depression The first new subdivision was in the east end and 150 home sites were set aside which was the start of the present growth of the town which has now be come city Mr Blair said The coming of the General El ectric plant and its additional employees created the need for more hymes and new school was needed Speaking of the Planning Bo ard to which he belonged after being mayor be said that tho approval of the Boards recom mendations was difficult to ob tain as the than Mayor felt they should all be questioned believe Mayor Willard Kin zie was one of the best may ors that Barrie ever had but it is near the time when the city will need full time top official Mr Blair claimed Mr Blair has suffered two strokes but is still able to look after hisown household Mrs Blair attends to general house hold duties and their daughter head of thepolico department is on employee of the city per cent in the last 10 years Manufacturing increasing in importance is also indicative
