hearsnl before leaving for the Kiwanis Festival The time really seems to move when you are excit ed We had quick trip down to Toronto On arrival we set up our band in the auditorium of Law rence Park Collegiate and just as quickly we were arriving back in Camp Quite pleased with the mornings results The Glee Club and Band did creditable job of representing Central at the Kiwanis lilusic Festival in Toronto last Satur day but were disappointed in the adjudicators final decisions He was very fair said Miss Wase director of the Glee Club but somehow we think he must have had poor taste in his selections The Girls Special Choir was awarded fourth place and the Junior Choir received third place award in the band competition on Saturday Mr Fisher and the Collegiate band came out on top in the Collingwood prcscnted plays of their own choosing at the seventh Annual Georgian Bay Drama Festival in Midland Barrie Norths play was ent ltled the Monkeys Paw and was the second play to be pre seated on Thursday The adjud lcator Murray Edwards pro ducer and actor for the CBC as well as writer and teacher of drama said that our play was very enjoyable show We were very pleased that Ron Simpson grade 12 stud eat won the award for Best Actor which was donated by Miss Grace McMillan The ad indicator said that Ron worked the hardest in his performance of Mr White in the play Bob Kinzic from North won the Best Supporting Actor award donated by Mr Thom pson This is the first time that Ron and Bob have taken part in the acting of such play Congratulations to both boys for wonderful job of acting Although Orillia Collegiate won the award for the best play we are happy that our play was one of those considered for this honor The play lvill again be presented in the first week of March The director oi the play was Miss Bartleman who did fine job of directing the play ing and coaching the actors Stage and Production Manager was Jim Brown Makeup which the adjudicator said was very Festival was held in Midland on Thursday Friday and Sat urday of last week with ten schools in competition Entries included plays from Bradford BarrieNorth Midland Camp Borden Stayner Gravenhurst Orillia Park Parry Sound Oril lia DCVl and Collingwood in order of presentation Plays entered in this festival are not ranked first second and so on Introduced Skiing By Class Outings Mr Edwards was exceedingly fair three of the major troph ies were awarded to Orillia DCVI for their excellent int erpretation oi Peddlars Pro gress under the direction of Mrs Eileen Peters The trophy for the best Canadian play was given to the only Canadian play in the Festival Tile Rise and Shine oi Elda Cadogan which was MidlandPenetangs contri bution CDLUMNIST WINS The ludividual awards were is not only great honor but tremendous thrill Stayner also received hon olrablc mention for direction and best supporting actor for their May The Man Who Wouldnt Go To Heaven and although they didnt win any tough uphill battle Determined to do or die they had established six point lead at half time However in the last sixteen minutes Orillia ral lied and St Joes under the everincreasing pressure know ing that they had to win mis sed few vital shots The game as tied even till the last min ute and then Orillia scored St Joes fought doggedly but time ran out After the game St Joes team exhibited its great sportmanship congratulating the Orillia boys and then treating them to luncheon Joe Saso the captain of St Josephs team thanked Orillia for the tremendous game and said that it was the best content he had ever played in were somewhat gloomy around the school for awhile This coming Friday and Sat urday five students from St Joes will compete in the an nual Senate Club Speech Festi val at St Michaels College in place awards in the High School Class and the Open Challenge Congratulations to our GIEe Club and Band for thcir fine showing The Barrie Collegiate Wood wind Qnintct won first in the seventeen and under class for Woodwind ensemble and second in the open class The girls are not only good musicians as proven by demonstrations of their skills at assemblies but all five are in the national bakeoff in Prudhommcs Garden Centre After displaying her skills in JEANETTE PRATT the culinary art along with thirteen other girls from all over Canada Jeannette emerg ed as second place pas scdthis some joy on to othersr It was this spirit that was felt by many in the school both by the students and the staff spirit that will he missed by many but which at the same time will be carried on by those who have been influnced by the life of Ray Rontner Barrie North Seniors Win Contest Against Central By LESLIE COXALL Burris North On Wednesday afternoon one of the most exciting games this year took place in Norths gym The two teams were Norths Senior boys and Centrals Sen ior Boys The students were not allowed in to the game until their last period of the day but the game was only in the second quarter When we went in the score was 125 for North and long shot from the side of the gym to the basket by Jon Fell helped raise the score even more Central worked hard in this quarter and raised their score to la Ohs and abs filled the gym as Jon Fell worked feverishly to get has ket and finally did just as the buzzer went so that the basket wasnt counted At halftime there was show of cheers put on by both schools cheerleaders Yell such as Bull Dog were from Barrie North and Richavchica The cheerleaders really did their stui as they jumped high in the air and did expert cariwhe els The cheering section was led on by the girls and every one yelled until they felt they could yell no more gym and the excitement rose to fever pitch as Central drlb bled the boil down the floor and shot for their basket but luckily for us they missed and North recovered the ball Cen tral put on spurt and with two minutes 56 seconds left in thethird quarter the score for them was 2423 But their lead was not held for long as Les Joliiffe made basket with long shot and alter two baskets by Central Jon Fell scored another basket tying the score at 2727 With 40 seconds left to play Marshall Aikens scored bask et bringing the score to 2947 for us The screams and cheers tilled the gym as Gary Palmer tried for basket and scored it just as the bell rang At threeequarter time there were more cheers by the cheer leaders of both schools Shortly after the fourth quart er started number of IOOF BINGO Proceeds to CPT Fund Central boys appeared on the scene to help cheer their team on The first basket for us was scored for Les Jolliffe tying tils score 33 all foul shot and then by quick and expert play ing Jon Fall brought the score to 3933 By this time the spe ctators were almost losing their voices because they were cheer ing so much With one minute 35 seconds left Wayne Clark brought the score to 3345 for us When the clock showed Les Jolliffe scored basket amid cheers which were deafening bringing the score to loss At 10 sec onds before the end of the game the Northerners started counting seconds The two teams played again today in is total point series of two games Ray was one who by his unln this week without paying tribute to one of our Ccntrai Although they have just re sumed practising this week the Junior boys volleyball team will travel to Orillia this Thursday to compete in the volleyball tournament We wish you luck boys SKIING LESSONS For the past week plans have been underway to introduce those who have never tried ski ing and those who have tried it to the proper tactics and methods of siding Through the labors of Mr Paton it has been arranged that for one entire day one entire grade will be taken to the ski bills by bus supplied with equipment instructors and tow facilities and encouraged to enjoy this great outdoor sport Last Tuesday the Grade 11 classes went and from all reports enjoyed themselves im mensely This week it is Grade 12s turn and next week if all goes well it will be the grade 10 class which will be taken This is an excellent opportun ity not only to learn to ski Toronto The meeting will in clude debate Resolved North American Labor Unions are not fulfilling their respon sibilities to our Society as well as prepared interpretive and extemporaneous oratory The team from St Josephs counts among its ranks Jan Cnvanaugh who recently won the Ratepayers Prepared Oratory Contest at Central Col legiate other team members are Michael Kelly David Dav ies Peter Murdock and Mich ael Collins It should he siirn ulating battle of wits and the bays chosen to represent St Joes are looking forward to it Also in the line of oratory are the school eliminations on Monday for the Knights of Col umbus Public Speaking Contest The best speakers from each class will have chance to prove their worth before spe culatlve audience of students Every participant cannot win but all will try their best Ill tell you quarter Ehnvale trailed Mea ford 10 points to six Ron Dut cher was the big gun for Elm vale getting two baskets and Dave Campbell dropped one Thompson Bennet Robinson and Wilcox tallied for Meaford In the second quarter Elmvole led Meafcrd 19 points to with Colin Elliott and Ron Dutcher getting three baskets apiece and Days Campbell one Bennet and Thompson again tallied for Mea ford with singles The third quarter ended in tie with Elliot getting three and Campbell and Duteher one each Thompson once again led the Meaford scoring race with three baskets while Benaet and Wil cox ench dropped one in the final quarter Meaiord led Elmvale to Dave Cam pbell Ron Dutcher and Mike Stone getting one each for Elm vale Meafords Thompson drop pod two more while Bennet and Butchard made one each The final score was 41 to 39 for Elmvale Ron Dutcher was high scorer for Elmvzlle with to points 14 of which were field goals the other four by fouls Thompson was high scorer for Mcaford Instead they are awarded troph ies for certain outstanding fea tures of their presentation For this reason not all schools can receive an award as there are only eight awards given Although the calibre of all the plays entered was high and new cheer which has been introduced is one in which the cheerleaders sing line and the spectators repeat the line For example cheerleaders Were from Barrie North answer Were looking forward to their performance The Junior basketball girls were successful last Wednesday when they defeated the girls from St Croix with score of 35 to in the final game of the regular league schedule The Stayner girls are now the Southern Georgian Bay District Champions in the division They will compete in Brad ford on March 10 with other district champions for the over all regional championship The girls have done fine job and we are proud of them The Junior boys and the Mid get boys also made successful wins over Camp Borden last week to place the Juniors in second place in West4 hill High School in Owen Sound This was home and home series with total points to winl The first game was held it Elmvale on Wed Feb 13 15 was fastmoving game throughout with the Owen Sound team gaining in the last half for 5138 win The rte turn game was in Owen Sound the next day an approximately forty students accompanied the team to watch the game from the Sidelines This game too was crowdpleasing and the EDIls students led by clur cheerleaders urged the boys on However Owen Sound came out on top with 4127 margin The basketball season is now officially over and we would like to
