Flyers lTIIE BARBIE EXAMINER MONDAY FEBRUARY 19B SPORTS TYPE By STEVE JONESCU 11 OLD MANS GAME if the present trend continues they have to in stall ping pong and billiard tables in the curling clubs The onetime old mans game and many persons still feel it is is winning with todaysyouth More and more evidence is piling up to support this fact My first interest in this game came only after arrived in Barrie some six winters ago At that time schedule after schedule bonspiel after bonspiel as sociated strictly with adults But things are changing few youngsters high school students are playing in the schedules More and more teenagers are competing and Winning bonspiels With youth comes change in the game Full of vim and vinegar the lads like to show their strength Its rare that teenager rink plays anything but knock out game Sure the kids didnt originate the knock out but theyre doing much to make it the style veteran Barrie Curling Club skip admitted that one rarely gets much to draw to any more The draw is his type of game harder to win that way Example of knockout play was never more evid ent than Saturday at the club in the first day of the Week Bonspiel In one game after four ends two were blank To those even more unfamiliar with the sport than it means that emphasis was on clear ing the house than playing The youth movement is exaggerated by the par ents More fathers are taking their sons to honspiels Oldtirners will park themselves behind sheets featuring young curlers Its not out of sentimentality either Boys and girls today are merely learning the game earlier With general guidance of the veterans theyre developing faster and becoming prominent at far earlier age than their It would be nonsensical to suggest that the top teenage four could lick the top adult young or old rink It takes years of experience to make top curler Almost every sheet of ice is different They often change during the course of match Millions of situ ations arise during years play The oldtimer has seen more of this number so naturally can treat the occasion better But just the same no adult rink will poohpooh teenage rink This too was given added strength Saturday when rink of ualified for the main is week JUST NOTES Theres mens jitney at the cur ling club tonight and another slated for tomorrow Both start at eight oclock Good to see few more persons take advantage of the skating and hockey facilities on the bay at the foot of Bayfield street The change house came in handy considering the chilly weather RETARDED CHILDREN YOU HELP THEM event finals to be played later
