revenue This was the consensus of panel discussion on tourism held Saturday at conference of the Central Ontario branch of the Ontario Young Progress ive Conservative Association in Embassy Hall The panel included Ontario Transport Minister Leslie Rowntree Arthur Evans MP for Simcoe Centre Robert Boy er MPP for Muskoka Clint Melville managing director of the Ontario Hotel Association and Willard Kinzie former mayor of Barrie and mem ber of the Georgian Bay De velopment Association Taking everything into ac count the tourist industry is really billion dollar business said ML Melville ND dollar spent in this country is more split up and goes into more pockets than the tourist dol lar th the people are too reticent to sell Canada Mr Melville said little is be ing done to get repeat business that government agencies and the industry itself are doing most of the promotion But they can do only so much It is the people in daily contact with tourists who can do the major selling job Theres no better advertising than the tourist who goes home happy wanting to come back and telling his friends Lack of liquor outlets was tourist problem in some areas Mr Melville said Nevertheless think the trend is in the right direction by bringing it out in the open through voting on tire question The hotel association does not try to influence people in any community where vote is be ing taken We just present the facts FREE ENTERPRISE Mr Rowntree emphasized that the tourist industry like any business must be devel oped through free enterprise The government is helping by expanding the highway sys tem said Mr Rowntree tThis is opening up lands lakes and rivers to more tourists Many opportunities are available to develop these areas Mr Kinzic said tourism is in sad state because there is plain lack of enthusiasm to pro mote what we have We laek communication to the people but most of all we lack activityhe said The tourist season for all practical purposes is just six weeks long Let us use our imagination to lengthen the season by provldv ing activities for tourists And serious thought should be given to establishing spccial rates to munam attract tourists in the of sea son Mr Boyer called the tourist industry the dominant factor in the economy of Muskoka and district which contains one third of all tourist establish ments in Ontario Our main problem is the short season and lack of ac commodation during the peak months of July and August Mr Evans reviewed the his tory of Simcoe County saying the area was particularly rich in historic sites of interest to visitors The panel was asked why merchants in some centres are allowed to close half day week during the peak tourist period thereby costing the com munity tourist revenue Mr Kinzie explained that municipality had no choice in the matter if 75 per cent of the merchants agreed to shut shop halia day Personally believe legis lation should be amended so that certain stores such as gift shops be permitted to do Each of the Teen Princesses won cheques for $10 Judges for the contest were Kenny Wells and Wayne Bjor gan of radio station CKBB Hap Parnaby and Ken MacDonald both of radio station CFOR The contestants were asked questions such as what was their favorite sport what were their plans after school what they would look for in bus band They were judged on therrattractivcness their perlt sonality bearing and overall impression on the stage Barrie Teen Town made an album effort in managing the dance and contest Approximately 500 swinging twisting teenagers attended the dance to see their Queen chos en and cap the days activities on the ice All present including teen agers from the United States were lavish in their praise of the decorations and organiza tion of the dance and contest Pony Show Is Big Hit One section of the activities on the ice Sunday during the Winter Carnival looked like scene out of the past Jingling bells prancing and snorting in the cold six ponies and four horses hitched to an tique cutters lined up to be judged by Mowat Tudhope or Oro Station First in the pony class were Nancy and John McEacbern of Napier Street Barrie The horse class was won by Alfred Sutton of Midhurst Runners up in ponies were Stewart Bell Barrie Earl Rowntree Elmvale Milton Ritchie Bradford Reid Barrie and Elmer Trim ble RR Barrie In the horse class Stewart Boll again came second Lloyd Bristow Barrie third and Jim Beamisb infBarrie fourth Liberals Prophets Of Doom Wardrope Tells Conference Ontario mines minister George Wardrope has attacked leaders and advisers of the fed eral Liberal party as prophet of doom pursuing selfish inter ests have no time for men like Lester Pearson Paul Martin and Walter Gordon who are ob ways talking about how bad things are in the Third Barrie Boy Scouts had planned to stay Saturday night in the bivouac constructed on the ice at the Barrie Winter Carnival area on the bay Scooter Peter Dean and the troop had spent part of Satnr day afternoon building the pine bough structure and setting up the reflector fire All was ready and the boys decided to take in the arena show before retiring to their scented bou doir When the boys returned from the show they found that someonoe had burnt all the wood they had prepared for their reflector fire so their overnight venture was never realized The boys have already stay ed out in similar structures for three nights They are doing this as part of the require ments of the Winter Camp ers badge It is good to know how to build such structure if you are ever lost in the bush
