When the Barrie Winter Carnival International Speed Skating Meet was born six winters ago United States skaters stole the entire show The few Canadians that opposed them did little to be even noticed It was similar story the next year But in 1958 skating on the long bladestook bit of toehold in this country More Canadians entered meets including this one This weekend Canadians 37 strong came to Bar rie Several won medals One George Walker of Ottawa even walked off with class trophy His class championship wasSenior men He scored 18 points which was also enough to win for him the Top Canadian Trophy donated by Batstone The of Barrie Walker was first in the mile and 440 second in the 220 and 880 and third in the twomile Another outstanding Canadian was Alec Jamieson of London and Toronto clubs He scored nine points in the Senior division AMERICAN STARS Big winner of the day was Gene Czerkas of Buffalo re PNSentlng Western New York Club Gone took the Senior mens title with 21 points erkas forte was in the long races He won the one two and threemile races Outstanding female skater was Mary Beth Breen of Lincoln Ohio She scored 20 points win ning all of her four races in the senior division Included in her wins was the special onemlie for the Canadian General Elec tric Trophy Mrs Breen has been in thin event since it started Last year she tied for the senior womens title In 1957
