Published by Canadian Newspapers Limited 16 Bayfield Street Barrie Ontario Walls Publisher Brian Slalght General Manager FRIDAY FEBRUARY Pu¢ Carnival Is Well Planned It Deserves Full Support Therell be hot time in the Old town tonight tomorrow and Sunday too The stage is set for the annual Barrie Winter Carnival and advance notices indicate it will be the biggest yet There has beenva lot of quiet pains taking work to make the carnival mem orable in the eyes of everyone who visits it Its package of fun and frolic to meet almost every taste Only those who see no beauty in winter or do not thrill to uttractlons that only such carnival can bring can fail to be interested by events that await them over the weekend The program in its diversity and the performers in many of the events will be top flight WEll see Rocket Richard the incomparable star of NHL fame world champion figure skaters Barbara Wagner and Bob Paul and the thrills and spills of speedskating and dog sled racing We can see these person alltlse and events and many other at tractions too if we give our support to the carnival as we most certainly should do The carnival is more than mere hoopla Its proof of civic pride in the advantages of our bracing winter climate simcoe County is summer playground It can be strong sttraep tlon in the winter months too if we make certaln of our wholehearted sup port of Barries own carnival The carnlvnl this year will be big bigger in fact than it ever has been before There are more events and more performers There is enthusiasm among the merchants who dug deeply for the hard cash to finance the pro tect Beyond the boundaries of the county there is evidence of great inter est on the part of many people who have already booked train plane and bus accommodation to Barrie over the weekend There has beenconsldarable advertising about the carnival and it has created great interest in some of the northern states Many of the per formers in the speed skating and dog races will be Americans All that remains ls solid support from our own Barrie and district citizens There ls every indication this will be given The carnival is the biggest event of the year in this city and we can make it memorable and successful through our support Those Car Licence Plates The Ontario Department of Highways has its hand out for the mint of money it collects from Ontario motorists for couple of metal plates to attach to their car As usual the motorists are holding back their contribution as is keenly evi dent from the few cars around Barrie bearing 1962 licence plates Probably many are just little short of cash because the holiday season is not far past and many others no doubt just dont like to part with the fee demanded by the department for their particular type of car until they have to It happens every year The staff of the Barrie Licence Bureau find them selves quite busy when the new plates 20 YEARS AGO BARRIE Feb 1942 Police Chief Alex Stewart announced that they have very little to do until it nears the deadline which this year is March 14 Then the rush starts There is every indication that the pic ture will be the same this year In Barrie as it has been in the past As the dead line approaches and the hours can be counted when the olice will be stop lug motorists with old cence plates on eir car the rush will start When citizens could secure their new licence plates and operators permit now in the matter of minutes they will wait until near the deadline and stand in line to be served Nobody can blame the licence bureau The staff would like their work read out evenly until near the middle next March Down Memory Lane byterian Church Camp Borden Fam ily Welfare Auxiliary met in Barrie Lib rary Hall It was formed for the purpose of assisting move by the Liberals The government had apparently plan ned to beguilc the electorate with the promise of slflamonth increase in old age pensions The Liberals have rendered this small stuff by promising to add contributory pension scheme onto the existing $55 foreverybody plan and pay an extra $20 month during the 10 years needed for the contributory plan to become selfsustaining Politlcs being what it is some retort to this can be expected from the Tories Doing something about pensions will win wide support But responsible Canadians will view with deepest con cern any careless or cynical rash of new spending schemes in our present econ omic condition Joseph Jeffery chairman of London Life and pastpresident of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce this week at Canadian Club Toronto was pessimis tic when he said We must brace ourselves for all kinds of plans and projects many of them longdeferred but rolled out now in all their glory each endeavoring to outdo the other in Marriage For The Diabetics By JOSEPH MOLNER MD Dear Dr Molner What ls the difference between diverti culosls and diverticulitle Can they be cured by medication or is surgery required Mrs Diverticulosis is small pocket or out pouching that occurs in the lower bowel This ll common Reliable es timstes indicate that at least quarter of us have or will have one or more such pouches But the majority of that 75 per cent never will know they have diverticulasis nor have any reason to care However if one of these pouchcd areas ecorn inlt fected the condition is called diverticulitis The itis end ing indicates an inflammatory disease as bronchitis is in flammation of the bronchi or to take clearer case as np pendicltlr is aa inflamed ap pcndix If inflammation occurs con servative treatment su ally CBIIDI diverticulitis downkeep ing bowel action regular avoid ing seedy or coarse foods Often there is only single attack although it is possible of course for the trouble to re cut The pouch is there it may become irritated and inflamed again but often it doesnt Complications can make sur gery mandatory but this doesnt happen often Generally very slmple care is all that is re quired Sometimes antibiotics are used to combat the acute inflammation Dear Dr Molncr plan to marry man with diabetes Is there possibility of my hav ing children who are not normal or who are likely to have dia betes also Ive heard so many stories dont know what is true Wonderlng As long as your own family is free of diabetes the risk of defects in the children lssmall The tendency towards diabetes is diluted when your family does not have it You might have child who could be carriertbat is one who could pass the tend ency for the disease on to subsequent generation or you might have child who later in life might develop the dis ease This does NOT mean early in childhood In short see no reason for you to be concerned about mar riage or course if you had diabetes or there was strong family history of it on your side then my answer would be entirely different Havmg itlor history of it on BOTH sides is dangerous Dear Dr Molner have small opening in my neck winch is hardly Liberal party mat to plan its election campaign in Ottawas Chateau Laurier Hotel last week It was one of the most disap pointing snd disappointed polit ical rallies held here since the war Four hundred delegates registered But by the final day they had run out of steam and fewer than 50 llstlessleerals gathered in the convention hall At the closing meeting they chanted harmoniously We are little black sheep who have gone astray baa baa baa gentle men scholars out on spree doomed from here to eternity baa baa 1133 Then they heard thenbnnner speech by their leader Hon Lester Pear son And alas for the gentle men schnlars who had advised him in its composition so did many Canadians sitting in front of their idiot boxes For of all the speeches which should have persuaded voters into supporting mood this was the most far out Instead of outlining Liberal platform instead of explaining what Liberal government would attempt to achieve if elected that speech merely taunted tbs present government in unsubstantiated generalities and in even less substantial generalities asserted that Lib erals are the party of economic Progress That speech broadcast from coast to coast was not good enough for country which is today poised dangerously at the top of very slippery and too little mentioned slope poised there not because of govern ment actions this year or last but because of longterm world wide developments beyond Can adas control and against which government precautions should have been planned five 10 and even 15 years ago The election will be fought on the record of the govern ment declared Mr Pearson But that record shows that more new jobs have been cre ated in Canada durlug the last four years than in any prevr ous peacetime fouryear period in our history and that last year Canadians earned more lhan ever bmore Those are solid praiseworthy achieve ments by the Diefenbaker gov ernment The only specific proposal made by Mr Pearson was that new Liberal government wlll start comprehensive system of health care Yet the former Liberal prime minister Mnckenzis King promised nadiuns exactly that at Lib eral rally in Ottawa no less than 48 years ago Get Canada moving urged Mr Pearson But he still lg nores urgent factors which the Liberals failed tonotice or at least to act upon between 1945 and 1957 Canada undamaged by war and with an economy the capital plus interest for those years out on spree But the Diefenbaker govern ment has taken steps to reverse that national impoverishment Machines are progressively replacing man in industrial pros ductiou Ever since the wan Liberal governments failed to prepare against this obvious technological crisis of unem ployment But the Diefenbaker government has launched huge vocational gram to correct this The terms of trade have been swinging against raw materials yet the Liberals refused to heed the repeated demands of the Conservative opposition at Canadian raw materials increasingly be New Programs By DON OEEARN TORONTO Well at least theres action This new gaverumentis de termined to move Appointment of the new Eco nomic Council must represent some of the fastest work over here at least in relation to the size and scope of the program contemplated In less than months whole broad new plan was drafted personnel found and the program launched In government thats speed With this new program there is no real question whether it will work The money and effort are go log to be spent on it which will ensure that it vdll be of some value The questionia bow quickly it can become effective and then how effective it can be The traditional trouble with councils commissions commit teesand boards of inquiry is that they waste tremendous amount of time figuring out what they are to do and how And many of them never do produce really good work be cause they hurry into their jobs without spending this time They dont know what they are doing and never really do find out This might apply to some ex tent wlth the Economic Coun cil There was elaborate planning in preparation for it Details were worked out even down to where the council would get its stenugrapbersH from common pool But it may be that there wasnt enough designing before the planning was started The aims of the committee as outlined in the original am nouncement are vague FOR COOPERATION You know its job is to help boost the economyand also to try and get industry labor and management working together lint beyond that there isnt any specific statement of aims And this does reflect lack of deep thought This will be corrected Tbs committee is too Impor tantto both the province and the government It will be driven And In turn lt wlll drlvo tojoma effective work The point of doubt is how soon and how
