Netminding Is Always Real Tough Business By BEN WARD OTTAWA CPLWhen those guys got in close either the puck went in or you did lots of times went right through the back of the net Clint lBennyl Benedld goalie with one of the great hockey teams of all time was telling an interviewer what it was like to be goaltender in the early days of big lime professional hockey After the first couple of see sons lost count of the stitches they put in my head They didnt have goal creasejn those days and the forwards would come roaring right in and bang you as hard as they could if they knocde you down you were supposed to get back on your feet before you could stop the puckthose were the rules remember at least four times being carried into the dressing room to get all stitched up and then going back in to play There were some other times too but dont remem ber them TURNED PRO IN 1913 Despite 18 years of such treat ment none of it shows out wardly today on the pleasant features of Benny Benedict strapping sixfooter at on Now living Quietly in retire meat from late career as an Ottawa civic office worker he looks back on his hockey years with fond memories and still fob lows the gamc with all the rel ish of youngster Benedict broke into pro ranks In 1913 with Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey Associa tion forerunner of the National Hockey League He was standout with Sena tors until 1924 when he was sold to the thenforming Montreal Maroons for $7000 After seven seasons Maroons sent him down to an amateur farm club Wind sor Bulldogs in 1931 and he quit hockey year later Benedict played on five Stan ley Cup championship teams four of them in Ottawa He ap peared in 12 Stanley Cup playoff games had 10 shutouts and al lowed an average of 135 goals game During Mnroons our professional team of all time With him were Buck Eoucher Eddie Gerard Sprague Clegborn Jack Dar ragh and Cy Deonenay But the biggest mark Benny Benedict left on the game doesnt show in the record books He was the first pro goalie to make regular practice of dropping to kneeling or prone position to block close in drives It was against the rules then but if you made it look like an accident you could get away without penalty got pretty good at it and soon all the other goaues were doing the same thing guess you could say we all got pretty good at it about 1914 and the next season the league had to change the rule Bruce Gibson of Ottawa brotherinlaw of Benedict and former amateur player him self recalls the night in Tor onto when Benny first per formed the flap The Toronto fans were screaming mad Gibson says They shouted Bring your bed Benny and hollered at the ref eree for not calling penalty PRAYING BENNY Toronto crowds took to call Ing the Ottawa goalie Praying Benny for his habit of kneel ing and the name stuck even after the rule was changed In those days penalty to the goalie could not be served by another player as now He had to sit it out in the penalty box while one of the other players tried to keep goal Benedict also was the first goalie to experiment with face mask although most fans credit Jacques Plante of the present Montreal Canadians with invent Ing the mask One night in 1930 Benedicts lose was smashed by blister lng shot from Howie Moran of Canadians didnt know what happened until woke up in hos ital It took him month in ed to recover Before returning to hockey he had Boston firm design hel met with metal bars to protect his face But it didnt feel good and threw it away after couple of games The following summer he tested various base ball catchers masks but gave that idea up too HERO 0F LOSS Two games stand out in Bone diols memory One was Mar oonsCanadiens clash in 1924 when the fledgling Maroons were overwhehned 1t endedup 50 Vancouver against the Millionaires It was 21 for See store with three minutes left in the game when two Ottawa playarewent off on penalties To this day Benedict doesnt know how be kept the tying goal from scoring We were out on our feet at the end but we won That was when the name Su per Six was tagged on to the Senators native of Ottawa Bum CLINT BENEDICT started playing school hockey at six
