Minister Shows Néed For Correct Attitude By REV JAC GEUZEBROEK FIJSI Christian Reformed Church The Pharisee stood and thus prayed with himself God thank thee that am not like other men But the base onl lector standing afar oil would not even lift up his eyes to heaven but beat his breast saying God be merciful to me Sinner Luke 1811 to 13 in general Pharisees dont have good reputation among us Christh and also people who seldom or never attend church know well what the name Pharisee implies In the parable we study we meet such man and also another They are going to the templeln our day we would say we meet them going to church Going to church is an Important matter In many res pects it is the most important activity in which we engage during the entire week Wherever we go in life we meet people it may be for less or for more important mnt ters When we go to church we go to meet God Jesus tells us about the two people mentioned in the Par nhle In the meeting they have with God something very strange happens An apparently good and very earnest man appears to be less acceptable than scoundrel can understand that the above statement surprises you perhaps very much But why should it seem strange to us Dont we all admire publieans and despise Phnrisees Is the Pharisce really so had Take note of the begin ning of his prayer Listen to him when he says Lord thank Thee that am not as other men are The man doesnt say Lord Thou must be thankful that there are some like me who are not like so many others No he says Lord thank Thee There ls in this an acknowledgment of the fact that it is not his oivn but the work of God Doesnt this indicate certain humility on his part when he stands before God Notice the many good things this man mentions in his pray er fast twice week and give tithes of all pos sess Now that certainly is commendnblc God commanded only one official day for fast ing but this man adds another day to it How do you like that Where God said Iiityrtwo days of fasting each year are enough this man and his brother Pharisees voluntarily made it 100 Look at the situation with regard to tithing The Lord did not ask for tithes of all of mans possessions Only from certain sources of income the Lord demanded that his people pay tithes This man took it upon himself to pay tithes of all he possessed Perhaps to this our response might be ery likely he could afford it This may have been true but dont forget that usually the more people possess the more difficult it becomes to give even for the service if God In mental institutions one sometimes meets rich pear pie who have poverty com plex but you dont meet poor people there who have rich eseumplex We are more in clined to fear losing our money when we have much than when we have little This had Pharisee gave for the Lords cause freely and abundantly Still the Lord was not pleas ed With this man evenless than With flint other man who was in the temple at the some time Why not Doesnt the Lord care about the sacrifices we make for his sake and came in this world What was the error of the Phariseet When this man stood in the presence of the lard he didnt consider his own life He didnt see himself as sinner stand ing before the holy God Iii had and he did take time and opportunity to look at other on the way to and in church When we consider ourselves and our sinful heart before the holy God we have no time for others We dont even have time to count our good deeds Considering and judging what we have done we ackowledge them to be at best an unlin ished task Didnt the Pharisce realize this To be sure he did So hetried to find peace with himle and with God by look ing at his works and compar ing them with what others did When we do such thing we travel hopelessly wrong road The sinner who stands before School Enrollments Over 1500000 This Year Robarls LONDON Ont CF Ele mentary and secondary school enrolment in Ontario will ex ceed 1500000 this year and ed ucation costs will be more than half billion dollars Premier Roberts says He told joint meeting of Ki wanis clubs Friday that provin cial expenditures have sky rocketed to dented heights because of public do mnnd for moreservices Ed ucation the costliest program was the most formidnble challt lengc Mr Roberts said the govern ment will be required to provide 70000 additional spaces each year in the foreseeable future because of the expansion in the pupil rate Capital truction prtr grams alone in the next five years call for outlays of more than $120000000 and this IS only the beginning he said Discussing briefly the three percent sales tax expected to bring $150000000 in revenue year Mr Roberts said public acceptance is encouraging in that people now understand they must pay for the services they requireand demand But he added that the governmen must never iniure the compe tltive position or the pruvince industries by taxing them tol severely Ontario which over the lasl half century has had half the manufacturing in Canadamust expand great deal if it is to absorb the 500000 new entrants to our labor force in the next 10 years he the bird and compare his life with who God demands can find rest and peace only in the cross of Jesus Thats why God gave that cross in this world and to this world Isnt it too often true that many of us are satisfied with doing far less for God than did this Pharisee We too like to count and wmpare We fail to go to church to meet the Lord there We too like to look at others Indeed it taked long time and hard strug gle to arrive where we ought to be to how our hearts and pray nothing but Mercy Lord The publican standing In the presence of the Lord did not mmpare himself with other men in his heart there was no joy that he was not Pherisee Likely he didnt even see Ihe Pharisee Had be seen him and heard him hemight well have become angry and left the temple saying if this is the house of God and such are the people of God Ive had enough of it Never again will they see me here He went to the temple to meet the Lord need Him Oh how need Him expres sedhis conviction How need his mercy and his love The more we see that need the less we feel like comparing good and evil This man uttered petition that actually meant Lord be reconciled unto me Ho realized that there is no ladder on which man can climb up into heaven and to God He was that God had to and did provide the rope that would save him from drowning How do we go to church Did we stop going perhaps be cause we do not want to Sit down with Pharisees Or do we go there to look around com paring intentionally or uninten tionnliy our life with that of others or do we go to church like the detective who once told me Reverend when go to church as do regular ly go to look directly for God and his mercy to me If dont do it that way see so many people wlth so many sins that know about Some times know even the minister too well Lets go to church next Sun day and the Sundays after that for only one thing Let us go to meet the Lord and to listen to Him that He may have mercy also for me George Iluvies CONSTRUCTION LTD Barrie PA 33136 aunsnsous InsunAucs Assucv
