crop Theprotein percentage of hay the mineral and vitamin tent and palatability areal im proved when hay is cutearly The early bloom stage of cutting will product much higher quality hay then when the same hay is cut late Another way to improve hay finality and palatability is to manure or fertilize the all prev ious to cutting This feed fact can he demonstrated on pas tures by fertilizing in early spring Cattle will always search out and pasture off the fertilized grasses and clovers first and leave the unfertilized pasture until the last Fertilized pastures are considerably green er more palatable and the cat tle will eat more of it The result is an increase in beef or milk production and the carrying capacity of fertilized pastures is considerably increas ed to addition and particularly when you are short of pasture it will pay to strip graze using movable electric fence This practice will enable you to pro vide new succulent growth at all times and it will be worthwhile and profitable venture When strip grazing is employed it is good idea not to pasture too close or the aftermath will make slow recovery TIME TO FILL $1105 This is also the time of year when silos are being filled with grass silage Probably the most important phase of silage pro duction is the percentage mois ture at which the silage goes into the silo Silage should pre ferany be about 65 to 70 per cent moisture when ensiled The grab test is reasonably accurate in determining percent moisture Take small handful of the sil age and squeeze into tight ball for half minute or so When you open your hand the ball should hreak apart in two or three pieces If it remains in one piece it is too wet and if it falls apart in manypieces it may be too dry and wont pack tightly enough in the silo and spoil moisture level acetic acid fer mentation takes place and the pnlatability and odor of the sillt age is good 0n the other hand when grass silage is stored too wet you get what is called butyric acid fermentation and the odor is unpleasantly strong It does not help matters much either when you enter the house with your butyric soentedcloth 95 FORGET OWN WAY WASHINGTON AP PIES ident Fulbert
