subject of the Conununlty Pool or is it Pall find it qulio blaming that the authorities in this pmgrea sive city can be so lacking in appreciation of the real needs oftbecityastospeud such vast sum of money on such stupid project There must be many people who contributed to the Lions Clubs excellent can vass for funds who are now wondering about this pool Here are few thoughts on this lmporiant matter They have come up during discus sions have had with people who like mysielf are engaged in trying to provide our young people and adults with good Plllsiarn of physical education An openair pool can be used for only fraction of the year To lengthen this outdoor season the pool is to be beat cdi Why not right from the start build walls and roof and have pool which may be used allyear round or at least build pool similar to those in Holland where the walls and roof can he slid away from the pool in fine weather leaving the water open to the sly presume that the idea of having pool anyway is to promote the sport of swunmiu and the art of diving in the city and lisenvirons To attain any standard in either of these worthwhile activities allyear reund training is essential Eelt lieve me know what am talking about have been teaching and competing in aqua tics since was boy loolnng at the world picture one notes that the top swimming and div lng nations such as the USA AuSlralia lliuigary Holland and Great Britain have one of two sets at circlnastances Either they have climate which per mits allyeanround swunming out of doors or they are well equlpped wllhinrloor pools DO IT PROPERLY we are going into swimming and diving in the city we should do it properly and make sure our pupils have every opportun ity to progress beyond the pad dling stage Canada needs pres tige in international sport beav en knows Readers may re member au article wrote for paper last year It was plantoput Canada on the map in aquatics With an indoor pool here in Barrie good step would be taken towards this end am sure that there are many of us who have had to train in an outdoor pool or lake or river braving winds and cold in hot weather we could not get near the water for paddlera and reflective splash ers and were obliged to train early inlthemorning or late at night The city seems to be looking at this whole project tram the recreation angle and among at fun and games for all This is only one aspect and in myoplnfon the last thing toworry about in province which has literally thousands of lakes for the recreatlve splash ers Surely armore worthwhile project is an indoor pool where we may tech our pupils to the winter so that not drawn or watch ly while others drown during summer collage swim wing and boating Why oh why must every thing ln North America be such big deal Why must we have such an elaborate outdoor pool with so many paper attrac gar and so few functional ben BIG DEAL We read that the pool is to be of Olympic standards Big deal Barrie Examiner May 12 Do you know what this means It means for one thing that the lenglh of the pool is measured inmetresiu stead of feet or yards Isnt that wonderful The pool is to be 25 metres long and we may imagine our best swimmiuera in years to come tackling Olympic or national swimming records Little do we know that the short sprint in these events is 100 metres which would involve four lengths of our pool and three turns during each 100 me tres swum On each turn good swimmer may gain up to one seconds advantage over an other swimmer swimming the some distance lna aornetre pool with only one turn to his ion metres This is why no at tempts at Olympic records may be made in 25metre pool This alone makes the crowing about Olympic standards little meaningless Anyway all Red Cross YMCA Royal Life Saving Society and Canadian ASA tests are measured in yards so what the beck mentionedlhis to the archi tect one day and he told me to mind my own business feel it is very much my busi ness and the buslness of all physical education teachers here who will have to administer our swimming programs DIVING BOARDS While we are on the sub ject of Olympic standards might just mention the diving boards The proposed boards are at one metre and three metres which is fine as one Olympic diving event is three metre springboard diving But if they are going to make such bemba about this Olympic business why not mention the other diving event the firm board or higbboerd diving The boards for info are lemme high with usually practice board at metres Thiecould not be catered for in our Olym pic pool step in the right direcflon would be fivemetre indoor board which is the standard in door highboard in Europe lust program which would at most run three or four weeks in June when everyone is engaged in soltball and cadetterm ectlv ides anyway and couple of weeks in September when teach ers are new and all are settling into new years work and when the collegiates aredolng track and field Somehow we must put stop to the frightful loss of young lives from drowning every sum mer One of the best ways is to teach young lollis to swim dur ing yearround schools pro Air Form or ldunsier and flew down 10 have visit will the officer in charge of the hospital here Mention of Oshawa being mil home city in Canada brought gleam of recollection to his eyes and broad smile to his face as he said That is where once escaped from captivity for little while was error DOWN Soon 11601 Asmue was tell ing me the story of the exper iences he had as prisonerof war He had been on recon nnissnnce mission over Kent England when his plane was shot down late in lecoiie got clear in his parachute but was seriously injured on lending and went iobospitol in Maldstone 0n recovering he was sent to prisonerofwar camp in Esp land Then his story went on One morning was told to prepare for long journey the next day We wereo not told where we were going but we were loaded on troopsbip and two weeks later landed at Hall fax TAKEN T0 BOWMANVILLE was taken to Bowmanvllle and placed in prison cempp in what had been school for bad boys This was the Ontario Training School for boys used during the war as camp for Gelman officer prisoners was there for over year when because of recurring tr bio with my injuries was tak en under escort to tho Oshawa hospital once week All this dram Barrie wants to be call ed progressive Let the city show it by abandoning this wasteful outdoor pool project and getting down to something that will really benefit the com munity for example small indoor pool Thank you
