AROUND THE COUNTY any PEG GYS COVE OVER THE BACK FENCE By MR8 JOHN EEBGIN RR Allister Inside the walls were three museums an Army Navy and civilian or provincial this last containing all the things that did not properly belong in the other two We visited the navy one first entering by door which opened into ship room my own defuritiont There were hundreds of mod els of ships from small models in bottles or ones you could set on your mantel or ulckvkmck shelf to huge ones you could bardly get in your garage The Cunard Line whose name is synonymous with ships and strip building had models of many of its passenger liners both past and present The first one saw as en tered brought me up short and stdod aside for few moments looking at it while flood of childhood memories poured over me Not that had ever seen the ship in question the old SS Essequibo but had had vi tal interest in her comings and goings for year prior to and alter the end of the World War She was at that time used as hospital ship and my brother had made many Atlantic cross ings in her during that period As German subs still infested the shipping lanes these cross ings were not without tension WAR With the entry of America in to the war casualties grew added toby the terrible flu epi demic The ovcnaxed hospitals had to be relieved somehow so many of the wounded who could not be used for active service aagin were shipped home with an added quota of flu victims The ship docked sometimes in Halifax and sometimes in Port land Maine My brother was not in the Navy but in the Army having gone overseas with the first contingent in the early fall of 1914 After being wounded in the savage fighting in France and Flanders in the spring oflels he was invalided back to Eng land The natureof his wound precluded further active ser vice so he was busy with non combat duty for several years When the hospitalhhipsbegan to transport the masses home he went on the Essequibo as hospi tal orderly at which post he re mained till the fall of 1919 more than year after cessation of hostilities That why was so interested inthis particular ship Besides models there were pictures of all kinds of craft deck plans pictures of many fiamous vessels ships logs and host of dther me too num crous to men There were uniforms and accessories of the vhrious ranks and periods of naval progress some displayed on wax models some hung against acontrasting backdrop On this floor too saw several momentoes of that explosion mentioned few weeks ago PLATES There were two metal plates train the hulls ot the ships in volved and it you could only have seen the charred twisted tortured pieces of those plates it might have jolted you hit iikn twisted crumpled pieces of paper that child might crush it before throwing away only in metal but paper There was also part of the an ehor of one of those ships the shaft with part of the hookstill attached forget how much it weighed but you certainly could not havelitmd it astound embedded in churchyard five miles from thesccne ofithe iexplosi rmagrneth deat potenw Hal ofrthat huge piece of metal automakershank air that distance Multiplythat Iundreds and youean perhaps catch glimmerof that horror One distinguished Canadian au thor Hugh Machnnan has writlen book the last four chapters of which give vivid description of that disaster and of the several following days Though written in the form of novel that part relating to and describing the combined earihlt quake air concussion tidal wave and fires set off by the collision is absolutely true The localc is Halifax Nova Seotia tho timo Dec 210 1917 The time of the collision 905 in the morning of Dec The title of the book is Barometer Ris ing The copy we have is pocket edition at 1941 but no doubt the volume is in your local library Why read of Nagasaki or Hiroshima and neglect hor ror just as great that happened in your own country to your own countrymen An event uality that had only one chance in million of happening and it happened to city and people totally unprepared for it hope you can get copy Youll find it some of the most absorbing reading you ever en countered My own personal opinion is that all high schools should give young Canadians some real Canadian works like this book or the poem of Evan geline to stir up some interest and pride in their own post Perhaps could devote part of future article to this subject but now let us continue our tour DISPLAYS 0n the lower floor were most ly picturesartists conceptions news photographs of people places and things etc connect ed
