Barbiiurates By JOSEPH MOLNER my Dear Dr Mother read your column about the dangers oi prolonged use at barbiturates My husband has epilepsy but it has been kept near completely under control with combine Qtion oi phenobarbital and two other drugs ile takes one grain three timu day This was prescribed tire years ago but he was using phenobarbital ior twice that long lie is not exactb under med ical supervision That is doe tor gave him letter so he can have the pracription feillle The original doctor this was at an epilepsy center said he could possibly outgrow the epi lepsy in live or six years so assume he intended the medi cine to be used ior that long In the last two years he has had diliiculty writing He knows what he wants to write but it takes some time to make the band do what the mind wants done Can you explain this plcaseiMits First the barbiturates didnt say that merely pro longed use was dangerous but prolonged excesslvo use Thats dillerent Constant use by someone who doesnt know what he is doing implies the risk that the amount will become excessive Prolongcd use tas with epi leotics is quite common and it does great deal at good In deed none oi our potentially dangerous drugs was developed without purpose Thesa pow erlul drugs are valuable and when we warn against misuse we hope that people will not he atraid oi proper use The amount your husband is taking is not unusual ior such cases and think it most im probable that he has been harmed in any way but only henetitted KEEP TRACK Howavar do not think it wisojor him to go so hang with out direct medical supervision not so much because oi the drugs alth periodic look see is advisa la in that regardt as to keep track ol his general condition There are many kinds oi epi lepsy in general one does not outgrow it so assume that this must he rather unusual case which is just that much 630 ions Loo Hunttoe semester Honeentnuon kgmogw on tho ggvovarly mumIna Chm min or pm rim awniaaw on um mum Ln World center cannot undertake to guess the significance ol the hesita tion in writing it may or may not have anything to do with the epilepsy but doubt that it has anything to do with the medl cation This should however be re ported to the doctor it deserves attention whether it is or is not related to the original condition Dear Dr Molnar Whenever put my weight on my heel it hurts and sometimes the pain even runs up to my hip There is nothing to see or feel on my heel only pain Ihatetngotoadoctoras maybe it wouldnt be anything to worry about but will do as you advisehills Since when dont people go to doctors unless there is some thing to worry about heel that hurts like yours would be good enough reason ior me From your dcscription your doctors irst guess probably will be heel spuran old in jury which has lelt little lump oi calcium or spur which is palniul when you put your weight on it An xruy tlII prob ably he needed to show whether that is an accurate guess Note to cannot see how switching the type oi vitamins could have had the least elicct on your youngstera bad teeth would iollow the advice you mentioned There is reason to think that something is wrong perhaps louity dict perhaps some chronic illness possibly both Hats pediatri cian take over EDGAR By MRS MEL HOWELL Mr and Mrs William Critt eoden and Mr and Mrs Norm an Sianahen were guests at the wedding at Mignonne
