PAGE TEN has ii ONTARIO TODAY Ontario Takes To The SATURDAY DECEMBER 12 ltrrnarrfi Ski tows are kept busy on th slopes of the Blue Mountains Slopes More and more people are learning that theres family fun on the slrislopes and because lhey are multimillion dollar business is being built on snow Young people in Ontario have always grown up in thetradition that snowtime is funtime Now their elders once less enthusiastic about winter are joining them The reason Where theres snow theres skiing and where theres skiing theres fun and frolic for the whole family The growth of skiings popularity in Ontario in the past few years has been phenomental matched only by the summertime activity of camping Equipping bansporting and housing skiers is now big business in the multi million dollar classr Roads to good hills are kept open for skiers travelling by car bus lines and railways run skiers specials resorts are building on thetheme of snowtime fun and new ski clubs are mushrooming province THE spear HAS anossomso in South ern Ontario as well as in the North There is the Lookout Ski Club near Welland deep in the provinces ban ana belt St Catharines has its Decew club Kitchener its Chicopee club So it goes around the northern rim of Lake Ontario through Hamilton Oshawa Cobourg and Kingston Geo graphy has favored the eastern part of Southern Ontario with good hills and fairly consistent snowfall The Northumberland hills back of Cobourg and Port Hope and the ridges north of Bowmanville and Oshawa hnve long been favored haunts of the ski enthus iasts and now they are being discov red by family groups who are finding out that skiing can be fun for the tyro as much as for the expert When the Metropolitan Toronto Conservation Authority laid out its splendid conservation area in the Al bion Hills it recognized the new and tremendous popularity of skiing THERE ARE UPWARDS of 56 ski clubs establshed in the province most of them now equipped with tows 8110 comfortable lodges In addition there are more than score of firstclass resorts found for the most part in the famed holiday areasMuskoka the Haliburtons the AlgonquinMadawa ska area and the famed country bord ering southern Georgian Bay The Hackly Valley draws thousands of weekend skiers from Toronto and th streets of Orangeville are gay with visitors on Saturday nights As the skier moves north he enters areas where hundreds of thousands dollars have been spent to give him good sport and make him comfortable Blue Mountain Resorts in the Calling wood district several years ago instal led the first bar lift in the province Last year it was rebuilt new diesel engine installed and the carrying cap acity increased by 20 per cent So it goes through the resort areas SEVERAL CLUBS AND most of the commercial lodges now have ski in structors There is school near Collingwood operated by registered members of the Canadian Ski Instruc tols Alliance There is jumping school at Midland operated by Pete Peterson who brought sparkling reputation from Norway Skiing families from the United States are attracted to Sault Ste Marie and theLakehead Near the Sault at Searchmount is one of Ontarios really outstanding ski slopes with an 850 foot drop and ZOOOfoot rope tow The Lakehead is internationally famous for the excellent snow condi tions that normally exist there and the variety of skiing offered from the swift slopes of Mount Baldy and Mount McKay to superb crosscountry trails The commercial resorts that run in wide strip across the middle of the province offer wide variety of ac commodation and cost Packageplan ski holidays and weekends are now being offered RESORT ADVERTISING no longer con centrates wholly on the delights of Isummer The holiday season is now recognized as yearround affair The Muskoka Tourist Association for ex ample includcs such items as these in its advertising Snow conditions town facilities and hills are among the best for the average amateur skier and family novice Muskokos ski hills are an allfamily affair Learn to ski in Muskoka this winter Curling skating and icefishing of course are listed as added attractions The Lakehead brag is the best Canadian skiing betweenthe Rocky Mountains and the Laurentians An average winter snowfall of 100 inches The Haliburton drumberiters point out that the Highlands of Haliburton are fast becoming estab lished as centre for winter activities And that is the story being told in more and more detail as Ontario takes to the outdoors PACE ELEVEN
