is annals mnldlak basing mi among outboon am By wniav CHRISTMAS With just 17 shopping days left until Christmas we are fast approadiidgmo moment when will b9 faced with the acquish titmot aChrlstrnes tree The selection of Christmas tree poses quite few problems or the average householder Will we have Scotchpine or spruce he get big one or small one When will we get it will we trim it How limg shall we leave ll up Every household goes through this stage about Ihls time oi the year The average household buys Scotch pine they set it up and trlin itabout three days to week before Christmas leave it up until New Years Day and it is usually about five to six feet tall The Scotch pine has just come into its own in the past decade as the most popular Christmas tree There are many masons for this Number one reason in our books is the hardiness of the tree It docs not drop its leaves yes they are leaves as leadin or as soon as thespruce Secondly the Scotch pine is more quickly readied for market as it mattires to the height of the average Christmas tree within six to seven years Scotch pine can be grown on practically any type of land and generally lends itself to the Christmas tree harvest more readily than any of our other coniferous trees LITTLE NOSTALGIA We are riot usually given to referring to the good old days at least not very often When we thinkof Christmas trees and Christmas it is the easiest time of all to think back on our youth Most people especially if they were farm or small town types can think back to the days when we just went few hun drcd yards and selected our own spruce balsam or Scotch pine and hauled it home ourselves This always made for grand outing especially in the days when automobiles were not as common nor as much of an absolute necessity as they are today Up until World War if we can remember that Christmas trees were available within the confines of the town and withlna mile or so of the town limits If one wanted to be really choosy he just had to go another mile orso and there were many to choose from In keeping up this old traditional part of our annual Yule celelt brations we have depleted millions of good evergreen trees We are very much infavor of holding on to some of these grand oldcustoms but also feel that here would be good place to get plug in about our favorite topicCONSERVATION Conscrvationmeans making wise use of so ifwe wish to carry on the old tradition of the Christmas tree we should be taking close look at the land available for the growiogof future crops of Christmas trees sy planting much at the available Wmte land in Ghristmas trees and by wise mopping or harvesfingof the trees mucblgood would be done for our soil and water resources Trees provide windbreaks and so help combat erosion caused by the wind They also help to hold back the rainfall and so help the supply of water By wise planting and harvtsting there would alwaysbe trees infill given plantation providing the muchneeded protection for our precious soil and water supply CHRISTMAS TREE SAFETY We are glad to see thatthepracbice of placing real candles on lrees has just about died outuThis is most dangerous especially as most trees are dry from being out well ahead of the time they are to he used Nothing but CSA approved electrical fixtures should be used around the tree and special care should be taken in checking on the extemion cord if one is required to make sure that thein sulation is in good shape Placing thebutt of your tree in container of water not only lessens the fire hazard but it also helps to keep your treegreen for longer period little sugar added to the water will make it last longer than just plain water All Christmas decorations should be of fireresistant type An easily prepared and reasonablypriced mixture can be sprayed on some objects to make them fire retardant The fire chief has supplied us with this formula in the past OFF THE TRACK Before we are accused of getting off the track and too far away from the great outdoors we had better get away from Christmas treesfora while and get into some true outdoors topics such as where are the minnows We do not know and trust that any sportsmen who do doiow will advise us so we can pass it along to the hopeful ice fishermen wecaiiootreinember worse fall of rainbow fishing orfor scarcity of minnows for ice fishing or for that matter for all types of game and fish There is an obvious waylo combat all of these scarclties CONSERVATION We trust that we will never see the day that we will have to travel as far as the people of Metropolitan To ronto in order to enjoy the great outdoors if some of us do not wake up soon this day is not far off WANTED1W CONSERVATIONISTS To paraphrase Wellknown song and multiply by 10 give me 100 men who are stoutvhearted men and dedicated to true con servatlon and who are willing to fight for the right we can still salvage something from this area But time ismcling there is still too much shortrange nearsighted selfish planning going on Those who stlckby the Conservation Club and steadfastly stick to their longrange plans raregoing to get somewhere at last We have never hadas much voluntary comment on our stand for conservation as has been volunteered in thepast year 15eople vare waking up and getting truly intéresteeristen in to Bill Boone Sportscast on Channel Dec 15 whenfiiill will have this co umnlst as has guest We hopebe will let us teecit on some of our pet Views on Conserva the best use of out not nral reources We hopethat we can in
