arouse some frantic bleatings on the part of certain intellect uals socalled and offbeat characters who will feel that their freedom is being infringed upon There certainly can be no doubt in the minds of anyone that the freedom allowed todays students by universities is certainly far cry from the freedom in many matters allowed in previous days We think the newfound ex ression of freedom is one which should respected and protected Freedom is one thing but outright laxity under the guise of permissiveness is not pro per It must be obvious that there are limits beyond which responsible institu tions cannot permit individuals to go Examination time is here again in most universities and it is interesting to note that the University of Toronto has stated that the use of drugs by stud ents can lead to expulsion We applaud tlus and say it is step in the right direction The logicaiity of the proposed Canad ian legislation takes an understandable perspectiveiespecially when one realizes colleges that in the United States similar propos als are being made Dean John Monro of Harvard makes it clear that they are ready to take serious disciplina ac tion up to and including dismissal against students using or distributing ll legal or dangerous drugs such as mari juana or ISD Dean Munros announce merit received immediate strong support from other neighboring universities and Many proponents of mari juana or as it is commonly called Pot and ISD have stated repeatedly that they are relatively harmless but re cent report by Harvard Health Service documented the dangers of taking these drugs and many informed persons now see LSD as greater menace to users than even addictive narcotics The Harvard re ort states it is inadvisable for an indivrdual who has taken even one dose of ISD to make major decision about himself for at least three months Since many students have not been able to see for themselves just how harmful experimenting with these drugs can be it is heartening to see prohibitive legis lation being enacted It appears to be the ageold conflict of maturity battling experience with the necessary measures having to be taken in order to save people from themselves DOWN MEMORY LANE 40 YEARS AGO lN TOWN Barrie Examiner April 21 1027 Coun cil raised salary town foreman Ed Shuter to $120 per month Local bowling alley ordered Closed at 11 pm Ai
