SIJMMEII DETOUR It takes level head to win level hand level eye Ilut even sometimes when you try your level best Things Awry There is more to the poem but we conicss we dont know it In fact we cant even remember the sage poet Nevertheless truer words were never written They can apply to almost any phase of life work play or as in this case sports or more exactly hockey Yes the Barrie Ilyers tried their level best And while things did go somewhat awry over the last several months that is not the whole reason for the Barrie kids being through for the 25651 season The other hall of the reason is that the 195657 Bnnie Flyers were just not good enough That is cold hard fact but theres nothing wrong with it You cant ride the crest of the waves forever Som thing was bound to give and it did This was in nutshell bad year for the Flyers The team was not as modes the other Fiyers teams and accordingly the fan inter est was down Home gameattendance for the Flych games avenged around 950 That is not good regardless of how bad they seemed to be at times However the fans cant complain of lack of thrills Glancing back over the season we can remember many instances that will stick with us for while anyhow The very first game of the season saw the sensational Ottawa Canodicns extended to the limit to eke out 32 decision over the Flyers About 1500 fans were on hand that night just about the largest crowd to be hero all winter In that game an extra feature wasone of the best lights these eyes have ever seen Dick Cherry and Jerry Wilson squared off with Cherry winning the decisi couple of weeks later in Guelph the Flyers lost rookie defence man Barry Ashbce for couple months when he suffered broken wrist and two fractured fingers The first trip to Hamilton saw Danny Patrick bump Brian Smith out of commission for few weeks After the turn of the new year it was quite evident that the Flyers were not firstdivision club and that they were going to have real light on their hands to make the playoffs Around the middle of January local fans were tickled pink when the Fiyers shut out the StMichaels College Majors 120 They were even happier with the fact that Frank Iiiahovlich the leagues most valuable player and top goalgetter was off the score sheet by the close checking of Gord Loveday who shortly after was released from the club Early in February the club played some of its best hockey wiri ning iouroffivc homegames Three of them were by shutouts two of them coming in consecutive games few days later Coach Hap Emms blasted some of his players for what he termed gutlcss play In the some light he praised lightweight Danny Patrick for his rugged play On February 22 the Fiyers made the playoffs by defeating the St Catharines TeePees here at the Barrie Arena Then there was the recent game in Ottawa in which the Flyers outscored the baby Habit ants 76 The seven goals was more than any other Junior club had scored against the Habs this season Around that same time Billy Forhan who closed the season with creditabletotal of 21 goals scored eight in three games He had the clubs only two hat tricks of the season Jimmy Josephson came close on couple of occasions Then of course came the playoffs and John Cbasczowskis sene sotional goal Friday night That particular game also featured some heavy bumping by John who had played checking game through the majority oi the regular schedule Also in Fridays game was another horrible exhibition of officiating by Jerry Olinski His boss Pat Pat vtcrson was in the stands and Jerry really gave him show TIIEIItVWAYS So another season has come to an end By this evening it is doubt ful if any of them with the exception of Al Norrena who lives in Shanty Bay will still be here Some of them we wont see playing in Barrie Flyers uniform again John Chasczewski Dick Cherry and Jack Kane have all played out the string Imveday of course has his release and it is quite possible that one or two others who didnt play as expected wont be invited to tryouts next fall Some of the surgbets to come back would seem to be Billy For han Jimmy Josephson and Danny Patrick Murray Davison and Barry Ashbee played good on the blueline the last month or so Garry Ed wards the speedy winger acquired from the Marllboros didnt score too manypoian but has the speed and could well come through Dale Rolfe the elongated winger who tapered off badly in the stretch but improved again in the playoffs has three more junior seasons left and could become quite player under Emms tutelageiommy Black worked hard all through Brooks played some good goal but will have plenty of opposition from Wally Adair and Bruce McKeehnie next sea SDII Murray Brydsonwho played the last month with the As looks like good centre for next season Bob Blackburn should win defence post on the merits of his few games with Barrie And Hap has other kids including those pickedup in the recent drafts to put the Flyers back on winning ways anvhow GOOD we motion ran summit FELLOWS JUST HOT The South Simcoe League semifinals are tonight with two games being played The first getsunder way at 730 with Cliff Browns CeeBecs playing Stroud coach Doug Kettle came up with one of their poomst efforts this year in droppingout in the semis by dropping 5035 decision to the Quinte crewmat Hart House In the semis the Barrie girls eked out 3936 decision over Trenton This was actually their hardest game as they had to conic from behind late in the final quarter The Barrio representatives heldv 129 lead at the end of thefirst quarter but then shared 34 points evenly by halftime At three quarter time the BDCI lassies were down 2345 With three minutes to go the locals Were still live pointsoff the pace into points in the afternoon game and Flyers went down to defeat for the last time this season when they dropped two weekend decisions unthé St Catharines TeePees The final result was that the Elyers annow pack up and go hometiwhiio the Teens whooutscored the locals in threesmlghfiplayolfgamed entgr the Junior OHA semifinal round against either the Hamilton Tiger Cubs or the TomatovMarlboxos The end or tholongtrau came earlier than most folks hereabouts suspected but it was inevitable that club with out too much scoring punch wasnt going to go too far in Iunior company Eithdi Way Either weekend contest which proved to be two of the more or citingsgames of the season hero or in St Catharines could have gone either way The score was 42 here on Friday nightfnndoa the GardenCity Seturday In these two finalmatchcr the Flyers had goal did not come tlii past the 16minute mark in tho final fraMe Fortwo periods Saturday the Flych outplayed the TcePcesat every position except between the pipes where Itoy Edwards was much cooler than Wally Adair who was called up from Newmar ket to replace regular Flycrs goalie Ross Brooks Coach Hap Emms of the Fly ers said that he didnt bench Brooks for indifferent play but for the reason that helhought the Flyers would play better defent sively with new goaltender In that last Saturdaynight per iod however the TeePees scored couple ofiast goals that broke the Flyers backs The locals did nt give up byany means but it was evident that their chances of grabbing lheduke were nil McKenzie Thorn Probably the bigest point against the Flyers was not their own clubLbut with the Teepsl That would be speedy Jack McKenzie The chunky transpianted west orner has scored most ofhisgoals tor so it seems against tho Bar riekid5 His two third period igoais on Saturday were his clubs fifth and sixth which putvthem out of the visitors reach It has been occasion indeed when McKe hasnt zoomed around the Flyers defence to test the goalkeeper In bringing their season to at close the Flyerscame up with play on Friday night that could match anything on the Hollywood screen gt The play occurred in the sec and period The TeePecs fired puck in lheFyers end and Ross Brooks the locals eagetender grabbed the puck and instead of clearing it behind the net sent it straight up the middle to John Chasczewski who had motioned to Brooks just after he stepped out of the penalty box Chasczewski then broke through tiny hoiein the Teeleas blue line brigade andput the thick in the net as he was falling headlong on the ice The onlyunspectacular View of Emms didnt have too much to say about the loss but Rudy Pil nus of the TcePees said it looked like the Flycrs were going to grab Saturdays game until they fell back in the third period He ex claimed that the llyers beat his mayhem Saturday good crowd of basketball fans watched an equally good has ketbail game in Gait Saturday night Theoccasion was the visit rass dz Glann intermed cluh from Barrie The final score read 10187 for Galt but what happened while thetliia points were being rack ed up is what really counted It is reported that the fans thataway have rarely seen such an outstand ing game The visitors from Barrie with only six players on hand battled brilliantly and gave Way tofati gue first then Gait The host Gall team had tug eomplement of payers and ha change them the play was the OHIBIHIVSCOYEr olten ihroughthe more likely of the two With the Flyers being responsible forrtheir Whatmakcs the game so much better is the fact the local giub hasnt been able to exactly eat uppractjce time fonthe simple reason that
