When the Barrie Ilycn Hockey Club starts its Junior Af OHA coma next Friday athomc against the Ottawa Canadians itwl1l be comprisedof aboutis good hockayzpiayers The fans arcwell aware dflbe fact loopbut uh goes Too little credit is givento the tireless business of picking good ockey club to rcpraent cur towathn the Boston Bruins minor ockey training camp started here two weeks ago the number of aspirants for junior job numbered between 5060Befbrethe week of training had elapsed there were about 30 left But not just so from so or 60 During the week about to or 15 cthers bad wandered to the Barrie Arena asked for and were granted tryouts Thcn into this week like number camein again with in tents of becoming Barrie Fiyers All told upwards to 100 boys some rom other provinces than Ontario skated before Hamid Cotton Hapï¬ Emms Bill Long and other coaches in the Boston Bruins organization This remaining so or so will likely be kept in Barrie until or close to next Fridaysbpening engagement So from here on in the tough job of weeding out the good players from thebad and the fairly good from the borderline cases wflhba even more difficult Such is the tedious though usually rewarding task of picking hockey club There are other than the usual setbacks too The odd fellow who looks iikche mtIldï¬BVele into valuable asset packsup his bags and goes home leavingno concrete reasonA couple cases at the Bruins camp resulted because of the inadequate meals here That gt one it would seem is only dream The meals regardless of where they are served cannot be that had and were sure that the fellows didnt just come here to eat anyhow Most of the boys knew of the camp several weeks in advance time enough it seems to know wheth er or not they want to make hockey career Probably the hardest of all as mentioned earlicr in brief will be deciding the borderline cases Hockey like any otheraport has its odd quirks Sometimes fellow looks very good in workouts and is bust in actual competition and vice versa Then there is the in stance where two members of aline can make third or the other way around Such was the case in Boston of the NHL last season Through trade Real Chevrefiis Don McKanney Leo Labinewere severed All three looked out of placeuntil another trade brought them together again The rarest yet probably the most important case is the youngster himself John Doe for example can he terrific goal scorer when he wants to be He lacks dash and fire and is likely to sulk when in slump Just his brooding appearance could knock few other boys especially his linemstes off stride But remember hes one of the good scorers on the other hand we have Bill Moe who doesnt score as many goals but gives it the old college try every second He makes plenty of mistakes but still his heart is always in the game who would you pick to play on your team with the constant thought in your mind that thestakes at the end of the line are high We wont say whetheror not the Flyershavethis problem but we all know it exists and gives the management plenty of headaches EleciedI Céptain We do know though that in order to beFLvers the boys must have burning desire to play hockey if they havont and Mr Emma has often given them due warning theyinay as well go home because time is too valuable to waste on an dont care youngster Hockey is business and if you dont like one vocation there are othbrs Another must of Barrie Fiyer is that he must be gentleman off the ice credit to himself the club and the community Any boy falling out of line will pay for it ln sucha way that hell think twice the next time Fortunately to oureyes anyhow there areno such ffalhouts in the number of boys stillgwith the club we wraparound will he 34 All of these things Hap must knowbefore he chooses his club And boysi All of these things he does know so you see the Barrie Flyers of 195657 or of any year just dont come to heyreproduced through hard work and deliberate con
