being sponsored by the county arts and crafts association which will be held Banting Memorial High School in Alliston on Oct 12 is and 11 The CBA Club made up of artists from Cookstown Alliaton Beeton and the surrounding area is cooperating by publicizing the event aud cncouragingits mem bers to enter paintings The board of the Banting High School has permitted the use of its beaut iful modern auditorium and Allis ton people are arranging for en tertainment and hospitality for special guests and committees Wonl has recently been receiv ed that Carl Schaefer outstanding war artist now director of draw ing and painting at the Ontario Collegeof Art and member of the Canadian Group of Painters will be the speaker on the open ing eveningot the exhibit Mr Schader has dynamic personals ity and is strong force in the present development of art in Canada During the war he was an air force officer and flow on many combat missions His ex pressive paintings of war scenes have become famous it is hoped that Mr Schaefcr will demonstrate his artistic ability on Friday eve cning Oct 12 John Small of Athlone Warden of Simcoe County will also be present on that evening to offic ially And Crafts About 36 people attended the arts and crafts weekend at Blue Mountain Lodge last weekend They came from Oriilia Barrio Stayncr Essa Station Culling wood Midland Thornbury and Toronto for the event sponsored by the Simcoe County Arts and Crafts Association Outstanding leadership had been obtained for the various classes Mrs De PcderyiHunt Toronto sculptor and designer who was born and educated in Hungary led the paintingand sketching group On Saturday the beautiful weather drew the artists out of vdoorawherc they gained inspiration from nature for their initial efforts In the evening Mrs Hunt appraised their efforts and made helpful suggestions as to howthe work could be improved Painting outdoors on Sunday was limited by rain so classes weret held inside and lesson and rac ice in ig dratvn proved ost helpfifiwi of is in exceedingly versatile artist She is now engaged in several com missions forisculpture in wood and stone for religious organiza tions and is famous for her beaut ful Christmas cards and paintings in addition she travels great deal in connection with her work Her gentle personality and quiet Golden Star LOBA Marks 33rd Birthday Golden Star Lodge LOBA 551 celebrated its 33rd birthday last month with special anniversary dinner at Allandale Orange Hall attended by 45 sisters and one brother In the gathering was the char ter mistress of thelodge PM Sr lilaud Bates Mumberson and sev eral charter members Sr Made leine Minn in PM Sr Lucinda Paddison Sr Etta Ferguson PM Sr Gladys Hooper Sr Kao Ad ams and Bro Fred Ellis PM Sr Cathy Weaymouth also charter member was unable to attend because of ill health The oldest member of the lodge Mrs NellieAlker 83 was also in attendance Worthy Mistress Sr Alma Furz ecott presided at the dinner and the meeting that followed All of the charter members present gave brief speeches and birthday cake was cut to observe the an niversary The turkeydinner was served by SrILuelia it the and cat ering committe Golden Star Lodge was organ ized by Collingwood Lodge on Sept 25 1923 Weekend confidence did much to inspire members of her group and to en courage them to improvetheir ability to express themselves through the graphic arts The textile block printing group gained much from the dynamic leadership of Roy Passano frcc lance instructor and designer who also lives in Toronto Mr Passano treated design and crafts manship as one He showed the group how to use this particular medium so as to bring outbeauti ful and startling designs suited to many fabrics and uses His math ematical philosophy of life pro vided an intriguing and sure guide toward developing satisfy ing designs Various projects act for class members made them achieve results which they had never expected Among those produced was black and white free form design which Mr Passano Visualized as most striking for drapes in modern room naturalistic designs flowérs weed and grasses which looked beautiful on scarf and stoleJ twotone small squar ed design which was definitely conversation piece bold de sign suited for dirndl skirt The experimentation of printing the designs by stepping on the blocks in rhythmicmanner and the thrill of seeing the design evolve provided much enjoyment Mrs Margaret Rowan of Beams ville was the instructor for the rugmaking group Her obvious enjoyment of this craft was soon caught by each member of her group New ways of cutting ma terials and of shading colors as one hooked were greatly apprec iated Mrs Rowan andher math or have over 300 students enrolled at their Rittermere Farm Studio They are most interested in pass ing on this craft to other Canad ians and give generously of their skill and knowledge to do so Mrs Rowans careful and thorough in struction and her interest in every pupil was found most helpful Good fellowship fun and food were provided in addition to the arts and crafts classes At meal times and in between classes peo ple enjoyed informal discussions and conversations play party under the leadership of Miss Lou ise Colley and Miss Florence Mc Artbur of the Simcoe County Be creation Service contributed warmth and hilarity on the Satlt urday night Mrs Hilliard led the Sunday morning worship ser vice and expressed her thoughts on creative listening and theIWay in which ones curses might be come blessings Jozo Weider proprietor of the lodge had made arrangements for the excellent catering service pro vided by Mrs Bud Kells of Col lingwood Miss Dora lurdon of Bowmanville acted ashusin Mn AND MRS CHARLES PRIDHAM ANTEN Mitts headdress She carried bouquet of yellow mums Mrs Regan mother of the bride wore an afternoon dress of pink chromespun with amatch ing jacket and white accessories Her corsagc was of summer flow ers
