visited by the district nurse of the Ont ario Society for Crippled Chil drcn in cooperation thh the public health 11 Service clubs involved Rotary Kiwanis or Lions were approached to make the necessary arrange ments for care and treatment Inharrie and Collingwood for instance it is Kiwanis but in other communities it could be different scrvicqclub in Owen Sound it is Rotary which looks after crippled children COMPLEX SOCIETY Barrie and Collingwood Kiw ants clubs are just small part of large and complex organiza tion the Ontario Society For Crippled Children Mr Wieder explained This got its start in 1022 in Windsor By 1973 it was still small with bank account of only $600 but it did have men devotod to the cause of helping crippled children As the work grew so did the society By 1928 it took on its first executive secretary For some years men volunteered to visit service clubs and stirred up interest in working for crip pied children Today there are service clubs in rio working on behalf crippled children Easter Seals is the we MICHAEL WIEDER main moncyAraising project and last year utmost $900000 was obtained in Ontario OVER 15000 CHILDREN That is lot of money Mr Vicdcr explained but remem her there are over 15000 crip pled children in the province that is those who come within the societys deli tion of crip pled child who will receive some measure of assistance this year From Easter Seals promoted in this district by Kiwanis 50 per cent goes to the society the other half is retained for local work The society maintains staff of 27 specially trained nur ses at district offices through Ontario who work in coopcra tion with medical authorities This scrvlcc alone rriakcs up 15 per cent of the societys budget SUMMER CAMPS There are the five summer camps which enables over 1200 crippled children to enjoy three weeks of supervised vacation In recent years the camps have been taking in adult crippled those who were formerly classed as children The 16 children from Barrie district in 1960 spent total of 273 days Estimated cost of one day at camp is $776 total of $211843 Of this some parents who could afford contributed $217 while Barrio Kiwanis with some assistance from the Van turo Club provided $61728 Some of this money came from Easter Seals some from peanut and Scottish biscuit sales Mr Vicdcr said the new four million dollar Ontario Crippled Childrens Centre in Toronto will be open at the beginning of 1962 to handle its first patients All this work done by his Barrie committee entailed at amount of personal time
