Concentrate On Selecting Only Best Stereo System importance in shop made to be certain those con ping for new stereo set is the selecti of reputable dealer who derstands stereo and high fidelity and who will dis cuss the relative merits of the various sets After deciding upon good dealer the customer should concentrate on selecting sound system that gives the greatest possible listening enjoy ment for his investment it is impossible for prospec tire buyer to check the quality of every part in stereo set but with bit of technical knowl edge the quality and perform ance is easy to determine CONTROL PANEL The control panel is the heart of any stereo set Prospective buyers should see if the control panel has some sort of switch enabling the listener to select sound from three or more sources records Alli radio FM radio TV sound or tapes In addition there may be com trol for monaural stereo or re versestereo sound Another control to look for is one that separately sets the vol ume level of each channel or otherwise balances the level be tween the two Tnis may simp 1y be pair or volume controls probably arranged so that they can be adjusted either separate ly or jointly Separate treble and base controls are also im portant check should be World Heard Edward By DOUG MARSHALL LONDON CP Twenty five years ago in sombre pre Christmas season radio listeners throughout the world heard the slow sad voice of Edward Vlll announce fateful decision find it impossible to dis charge my duties as king as would wish to do without the help and support of the woman love Thus an uncrowned king re solved personal decision in volving love and duty and ended political crisis that shook the British Constitutions triple pil lars of monarchy church and state For more than 15 years he had as Prince of Wales en dured the strain of majesty en chanted the world with his charm and as roving ambas sadot of empire achieved enor mous popularity Yet his decision to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson an Ameri can divorcee resulted in him rennuncing the throne It was the first voluntary abdication in more than 1000 years of Eng lish monarchy STATES ARGUMENT The stunning action found nearly every Briton involved in an endless nt over whether the King had been right or wrong to abdicate Today the arguments are be ing revived and the contempor ary consensus seems to be that in the circumstances the King did the best possible thing John Raymond writing in The Sunday Times says Things could not have fallen out dif ferently than they did because the majority of the community found Mrs Simpson unaccept able and because the King was tempermentally and psychologic ally unprepared for kingship was good Prince of Wales but dont know whether should have been good king the Duke of Windsor told him in recent interview 15 IMMEDIATE SUCCESS The prince began his prepara tions for monarchy with his tour of Canada in 1919 He was an immediate success prince charming who showed as La bor politician Pethick Lawrence later put it Closer associations with our common people than any monarch since the days of Charles 11 Here was royal prince who could play and lose at poker with his Alberta ranch hands and chuckle happily when the Ontario mining town of Timmins greeted him with the banner This is your town Paint it rod or any damn color you like His smile his common touch his easygoing ways and the suggestion of shyness in his bearing delighted people every where SENSE WEARINESS But beneath it all there was certain reluctance and loneli ness detectable weariness with pomp circumstance and regal ceremony an unwilling ness to livethe rest of his life in the goldfish bowl of Bucking ham Palace Most important says Ray mond King Edward did not possess the father figure ele ment the incarnation of the community as wholewhich was so strongly apparent in George The modem and real life prince in other words lacked both the emotional capacity and the inclination to make the transformatiomto the necessar ily austere monarch These factors combined to force the abdication crisis of 1936 towards its inevitable cli max trols produce notieceable dil ierencc in treble and bass tones when the controls are rotated Ask the dealer about ampli fiers and make sure either first hand or from the technical liter ature that the set has com plete isolated amplifier for each channel The amplifier is that part of Ihe set which picks up the tiny electrical signal receiv ed from the record tape or ra dio Iuner and amplifies it in proper balance and feeds it to the sound speakers which turn it into sound the car can hear LOUDSPEAKERS Loudspeakers important in any system are doubly import ant in stereo because two of each kind are needed These loudspeakers must be well mot Chad and well located In any good package set the speakers will be as far apart as the cab inet will allow and will be equi distant from the centre of the cabinet The size of the speakers is also very important There woofer 110 or preferably 11 inches in diameter and small tweeter three to six inches for each channel No stereo set will provide sat isfactory sound reproduction un less it has what is known as crossover network to allot the proper range of frequencies be tween large and small speakers Monaural hili stereolearn ing about them is an exciting process of exploration it can mean the difference between the jshould be large speaker or thrilling sound of entertainment or the helpless fury of not hav ing received your moneys worth when you listen to your favorite music Recorded hats thinking of keeping the ball bouncing with repeat performance next year The idea is the sane That with little help and some bold ness Canadians can export al most anything To support the view the trade department has dozens of suc cc stories in its files Some took over the department 14 of them are on the incredible side such as selling dolls and ballpoint pens in Japan watches in Switzerland umbrellas in Erltaln and camera lenses in Germany The 51yearold ltlr Hces who months ago called the export promotion conference as one of his first moves He summoned home no trade commissioners from posts around the world and invited Canadian producers to meet them at threenveek national sales meeting More than 1300 businessmen came ltfr Hces outlined the results in recent speech $22000000 in new export business so for 922 new overseas sales agen cies of Canadian firms estab lished with another 1200 pos sible agencies being considered SOME DISAPPOINTMENTS informants say tentative plans are already being made for an other export conference here late in 1962 The departments magazine Foreign Trade quotes the happy reaction of one company to the first conference As result of your good work am rather in quandary as have lit teraJy been flooded with re quests for our line Officials concede there have been disappointments too But some of these the department says are the fault of lack adnisicul exporter An example is the clothing manufacturer who was lined up with new agent in Britain The agent dug up so trial or ders for mens sports shirts The manufacturer turned down the orders as being too small Trade commissioner Bert But ler in London said they could have multiplied into big sales The oth side of the coin is Iowans lle Que fumituro company which recently made the first sale of Canadian fur niture in Britain since before the Second World War Com pany president John Sharp flew to London to solve some complaints by the buyer ma jor department store and now there are prospects of expanding sales to department store chain in Britain GOVERNMENT LOANS Besides the trade promotion conference with its Emphasis on the use of Canadas over Genuine Stereo Discs Made Only Since 1958 Whether individual taste runs to symphonies or jazz or some where in between shoppers will find there are good stereo rc cords of most favorite types of music available However poor quality stereo records are also available even of performances by the finest artists One reason is that no stereo system was accepted throughout the record industry until early in was when the Western Elec tric system omn recognition Most recording companies he gan recording by the Western Electric system but some com panies also began turning out stereo records of sort from any old master tapes that faintly resembled stereo produc tion These old tapes had been made only for monaural repro duction and the sound had been recorded on more than one channel simply to increase the fidelity not to produce Etereo effect To the untrained eat it is often difficult to tell the differ ence between true stereo and the best of these doctored monnural records It is wise to avoid the ones that were not re corded under true stereo condi tions One safeguard is to check the date the recording was made If the record label doesnt giv the date ask for proof that the record was made with stereo techniques If it was earlier than 1958 its unlikely to be true stereo As for record quality in general one good rule is that good record is usually thin and record that seems thick may be low in quality
