CANDIDATE FOR ALDERMAN Hopes To See More Trees Lining Barrie Streets By JIM srorr Most of us ignore trees ex ept in the fall when we admire the patterns of color formed by the changing leaves or when one of them gets in our way and we want the city to remove it Les Iollife candidate for alderman in ward one talks about trees almost as if they were human This is not an rising They have been part his daily life for more than 20 years tic took course as tree surgeon in 1938 lie is now forestry supcrv visor of the Georgian Bay area for Ontario Hydro and part of his job is to make sure that trccs dont Interfere with th hydro lines HIS DREAM One of his drcams Is to see Barrie as city full of beautiful trees Willard Kinzie came out with me couple of years ago and drorc him around the city and showed him what could be done with trees My plan would take about is years removing 20 or so old trees every year and planting about too new ones The mayor agreed that the plan was good idea but nothing was ever done about it was money on maintenance later This will be Less sccond try at seat on council in 1959 he lost out to Earle Williams by three votes The roads are good in the win ter but every spring they are full of potholes and patches The amount of money spcnt on didnt ask for recount he said because It was fair fight and felt that there would always be ncxt time He is not entirely pleased with the present council wont mention any names he says but there are certain aldermen who look around to see how someone else is voting fore they cast their own vote patching every year is pathctic Its like pulling coat of cheap paint on housc and thcn hav ing to paint it all over again Les Jolliffewas born in Lon don Ontario in 1913 and wont to work in his fathers grocery store when he left high school The pinch of the depression boat the grocery store into the ground and Les left home to work at supermarkets first in dDetroit and then back in Low OIL NEW JOB Tho supermarket nothing against Les as can didate for mayor but think it would be crying shame if any position was filled by acclama Lion in city of 21000 Ill be disappointed if there are not more than three for council wish to take this bpportunityto express my views on few outstanding issues which are of the ut most importance to the residents of Innisfil Township Regarding our assessment If it were low ered approximate 20 we would appreci ate savings of 22000 dollars on county pay ments alone The same savings would to our High Schools Hospitals etc payments made on assessment basis WW and any giving Many Nominated In Gwillimbury any one matter with which the ratepayers were discouraged pality since 1955 and it was felt there should be shakeup The only criticism of any ac count camc from Councillor William Scotch who had been quoted as saying there would be more accidents on the Canal Road Ho said they had been using horse and buggy roads in the township long enough but the old system is hard to get rid of The redrcdging of the canal was largely responsible for tho condition in which the road alongit was left when 17 foot is moved ovcr it leaves too little for road use NOT CHANGE
